Anyone else go through this fear?

I have my physicians exam in 3 weeks and I am soooo excited. BUT, I keep having these terrible thoughts that the surgery won't work.  All I keep thinking is that I will have the suregery, follow my surgeons and nutritionists instructions to a "T" and still fail. Is that crazy?  Is it possible?  I am not afraid of cheating, or testing the waters, I am just terrified that I will do everything right and still not lose the weight?  Anyone else have this fear?

I think every single one of us was sure we'd be the one person wls didn't work for.   It's normal.   Hey you live close, and i work in Bloomfield.    Let me know if you want to get together. Linda

Well like everyone has said that we all thought like that....It must be years of failing at diets.. The proof is in the sugar free pudding....lol....

I remember when I found this site in 2001 I read almost every profile from Michigan (OH was WAY smaller then). The one common statement from everybody was…”will wls really work for me?” Guess after all of the diet failures we experience, it’s natural to assume this will be another futile attempt.

The difference here is that it’s not a will power thing. The surgery significantly restricts our food intake and we fail to absorb calories and nutrients.  Bottom line is you WILL loose weight. That being said I always cringe when I hear people say stuff like ...”its gone forever” or “I never have to worry about gaining weight again” The truth is you CAN fail …I have 3 wls friends that have gained back a significant amount of weight. (Two of them are over 10 years post op and the other just over 7). WHY?? Because over time they began to absorb more and they could eat more volume-wise and/or they grazed more.

The good news is that 2 of them went back to the basics (protein, water, & exercise) and are back in loosing-mode. PROOF that the tool is STILL there. My advise to new post ops is to follow your instructions, and during your honeymoon period remember that the days of the weight just falling off no matter what you do will come to and end…SO develop good eating habits NOW. (My friends sure wish they had).  As for me… I still weigh every day and if I see more than a 5lb gain for more than 2 days I’m back to the old routine. I’ve worked too hard to come this far to undo things. I’ve learned that  .....NOTHING tastes as good as thin feels!!

Hope this didn’t come off as negative input, I just wish back when I had my wlsl more older post ops would have told me some of this. Hang in there Sheryl you’re going to do fine.

Hi, I too have that same fear of doing everything right and still failing.  I keep reading stuff on here from the OLDIES and they give such good advice that I know that I could turn to them for support/help.  I am sure it is our years of failures that make us think that we are just gonna fail anyways.  I use the OLDIES information to reaffirm myself that I will be ok and lose too. Time will tell.  I have a surgery date of 8-28-07. Take Care, Cindy  :)

If you follow instructions you will not fail.  If you don't follow instructions it is possible to not lose all of your weight or gain it back. I personally know several people who never lost even half of their weight and have regained.  It takes 100% commitment to the program.  That does not mean that you will not ever mess up, but you have to be commited to working hard and doing what it takes to stay on track.
