Hernia?

For those of you who have had a hernia, how did you know you had one?  I know sometimes they can be seen bulging, but that's not the kind I am talking about.  I had surgery 2 years ago, open rny.  About 6 months ago I started having intense episodes of pain in my chest.  My first thought was that it was my heart so I went to the doctor and got that checked out.  The only thing they found was mitral valve prolapse, which I already knew about.  Now about 3 times a month I have pretty severe pain that starts right in the middle of my chest and feels like it goes through to my back.  It comes on gradually and subsides in a few minutes.  A friend of mine asked if the pain I am experiencing could be from a hernia.  I have no idea but will ask my doctor about it next week.  Just wondered what others had experienced.  Thanks! Sandra

Sandra Do you still have your gallbladder?  That you pain "comes on", then subsides (colic) could even be gas, although it seems a bit high up for that.  Try to keep track of when it starts (is it after eating?...what did you eat last? etc.) and how long it lasts.  Details will help your doc distinguish between gas, and something more serious. Good thoughts to you Denise
