Hi Melinda, My name is Marie and Dr. Scholten was my surgeon a few years ago for RNY. He's an excellent surgeon and has great knowledge in the complete process. He has a wonderful office staff too! Just do as he advises you to do and the journey will be successful.  The best of luck to you!

Melinda; I had Dr.Vanderkolk he and Dr Scholten are together . The office staff are great and no question will be unanswer. Anne is great to work with and MaryKay the nurse is wonderful. They will do a lot of testing for pre-op and ensure you are prepare for this big life changing process. I had my done on June 13 -07. The hospital staff on 4C at the hospital speak very highly of both of the Dr. I felt I was in the hands that any one could ask for durning my surgery and my recovery.I highly recommend Academic Surgery for bariatric suegery. They do it one way and one way only as the team of Dr. told me not short cuts.

I had my orginal surgery with the other surgeons in Grand rapids and had nothing but problems.  Then I went to Dr Vanderkolk and Scholton and they saved my life by correcting my procedure.  Their office staff is great and they are caring and compassionate and know there stuff.  I would recommend them before I would recommend the other office in Grand Rapids.  Both surgeons are highly professional and I would trust them with my life.  Good luck on your journey Tricia

I had Dr scholton for my surgury and herina repair.  Hes a nice man  lovely bedside manner.  Hes very knowledgeable about his surgury.  I had every confidence in his skills and would use him again for surgury  if needed.   I did not like the post care  the only reason to go in after surgury is to get weighted   they dont deal with any problems you have from the surgury and basicly tell you to go find your own answers if you have a bad time getting protien sources(  they offer a milkbased  post op diet  im allergic to milk   and they wouldn"t  give me any help   in simply ideas fo where to start to look for  what i needed.            But I d still go back to him surgury because of his skill  then do post op with my pcp

I had Dr. Scholten for my RNY on April 24, 2007. Please see my profile for some info on my experience with him. The office staff is wonderful and the support group (monthly) is invaluable. I did a lot of research to find the best bariatric surgeon in the area and he is it. He is conservative, but when you're talking about a surgery that some people die from, that's what I wanted. I did not find his personality style compatible, but what I wanted was his skill, and he brought me through well. Be sure to understand though -- you will be having an open incision, not laproscopic, with this doctor. My husband had an RNY about 18 months ago with his partner, Dr. Vander Kolk, and was very happy with his experience.
