Medications and other crap

I'm not sure if this applies to DS or bandsters,,,,, I broke my wrist about a week and a half ago. I've had some trouble getting it looked after but I've got a doc now who is on the same page with me realizing that I'm a musician and need my hands fully functional. But while going through the pain med argument with the original doc (I fired him because he couldn't grasp the Motrin issue) I've made and observation,, I think we need to modify our dosing. I think we need to spread out our medications like our meals and everything else. If I drink a little wine it hits me fast and hard and is over in about 50 minutes where as before I could drink for an hour before I would feel it and it would last for hours. Sugar hits me fast and is done in the same 50 minutes. So what about meds? I spread my vitamins out so I should do the same with my pain killers but my Vicodin is in 750 mg tablets one every six hours. So I should cut one and take it every three? As for the wrist,, it's not been set or in a cast yet because there is another problem and he wants to see how I react to therapy then he'll decide if he needs to do an open reduction(surgery) so I'm in a splint. The original doc wouldn't cut me a script for vices because he said Motrin was good enough. I explained to no avail so he was dismissed. Some people just don't get it. kp

Kevin, I totally agree with you on the meds thing - spacing out.  If you can absorb only so much meds before it goes thru your body - you are not getting the full benefit of medications.  For myself - I take thyroid meds.  I will be having surgery in August.  I am concerned because I've always had thyroid issues.  Ya take one pill in the morning and it's supposed to last all day.  When you do bloodwork - its in the morning....so what happens later in the day?  Your bloodwork is always gonna show good right after you take meds anyways.  I would bet  money that those pills go thru your body just like your food does.  Where are the pills gonna "HIDE" in that little pouch anyways!!!!!  I guess I wouldn't be afraid - in your case - to take 1/2 every three hours.  You are probably the only one who would beable to tell if its working or not.  After WLS I am sure you know your body better than any doctor - gas and all!!!  hahaha Hope it gets better for ya.... KP, first of all let me tell you that I am sorry you hurt your wrist so bad. I have to agree about the meds. When I had sinus surgery in June I took a little bit less than it called for a little bit more often and it helped the pain. And I was on liquid Lortab. I have the same problem if I have a headache and I use tylenol. It works within 20 minutes or so but then it seems to wear off faster than it used to. I have one med that I am on comes in regular or extended release and my PCP did not want to put me on the ER because he was afraid I could have 2-3 left in my pouch at any given time and might OD. I think part of this is because I am only one of a few patients that he has that are WLS. I try to relay information from Hendrick to him so that I educate him and it has helped. Good analogy. Maybe some of us should be test subjects and they can do some research on this. LOL Maybe then Drs will get how to treat us with meds properly.

Ugh...sorry to hear about the wrist...I hope it heals quickly and is good as new when it does! As for the pain meds, spreading out the same dose over a period of time is what my surgeon had told me to do.  Of course I was on the liquid stuff...but he said, "the script calls for 15-30ml every 6 hours...instead, take the same dose, only spread into 1 hour intervals"  So, I was taking 2.5 to 5 ml every hour.  If possible, I'd cut it 4 ways and take it every 2.  You want it to work without making you loopy or passing out.  Just a thought.

sorry about your wrist.

i often wonder the same thing as i'm on several extended release medications including a pain med. Dr. S. and my other doctors think i should take it as directed but i wonder a lot if my problems with pain relief is due to how we metabolize these pills.

When i was taking Vicodin i took the Lortab version. It was liquid so i absorbed it quickly but i do think we metabolize these things more quickly as well and i'd find myself back in pain after about 2 hours or so.

Be careful, you take those vikes long enough, no stool softener will help. FIBER ONE and a stool softener seem to be the trick. half a cup of that cereal is like 12 or more benefiber tablets. and tastes better.

i've got a great pain doc who works with a group that your doc (W) sent me to, they are totally on board with finding pain relief for us GAPs. If you need her number, let me know.
