Need help with Medicare/Medicaid

My daughter is in need of help.  She now realizes that gastric bypass surgery is the answer for her.  She is extremely obese and seen what amazing things have happen for my husband and I since our surgeries in December.  The problem.....she has Medicare and Medicaid.  Doctors do not want to deal with that combination.  We live near Greenville so we are located centrally to many metro areas.  Does anyone have any suggestions on Doctors that may take her insurance combination? Thanks so much for any help you can give! Hugs, Lori

My surgeon had no problem taking mine.  I have both as well.  The only thing I paid out of pocket for was my psych consult.  His office is in Warren and the hospital in Detroit.  I realize that's quite a drive, so maybe someone closer can help with a suggestion?   If not, she could still have a surgeon that is some distance and maybe find a local support group.  Just a thought.  I wish your daughter the best.  Any questions, please feel free to ask.

Hi Lori I also have Medicare & Medicade, No problems with Insurance at all and they still accept Medicade patients.  I also went to the same office as Shananeea (? sorry).  That's Dr. M. Wood & Dr. J. Taylor office.  They are both great surgeons.  Their phone # is 586-582-9316 their web site www.myabmi.com.

You'll be glad you made the call.

Good luck...............Kathy A.

I had my lap RNY this year at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, and Medicare (primary) and straight Michigan Medicaid (secondary) paid for everything except $200 (for the required initial informational meeting).  I had absolutely no problems getting approved.  In fact, I didn't have to deal with either insurance company -- the program coordinator at HF took care of everything. Medicaid is actually accepted at a bunch of bariatric hospitals in Michigan -- the problem is finding one that takes Medicare.  Medicare has very strict requirements about where patients can receive this type of surgery, and the hospital must be a Center of Excellence or Medicare won't pay for the procedure. There are currently only about 7 or 8 hospitals in our state which are Medicare approved (but there were only 3 when I started the process!).  Here's a link to their contact information... http://www.surgicalreview.org/locate.aspx?state=US-MI#srchResults I wish your daughter the best of luck!!

Doctor Schuhknecht is your man.  He's done my follow ups and plastics on medicare/medicaid.  He also did an amazing job of WLS on my fiance and on KP. Also if you want to drive a bit the Cleveland Clinic will take it.  That's where i had my WLS done (at their Florida center) and they are THE best.  I think their best WLS surgeon is in FL but their center in Cleveland is still top notch.

Hi Lori, I too have Medicare and Medicaid and so far I have had NO problem what so ever in getting my RNY set up.  In fact, it's been rather easy!  I am going to MMPC in Grand Rapids and Dr. Foote (excellent surgeon) will be doing my procedure.

I suggest you do a little snooping around there on OH.  That's how I decided on Dr. Foote and then found out he is very much approved (no questions asked) by Medicare and Medicaid as their only requirements is that it is a "center of excellence" which MMPC is! You will find this link under fourms ~ insurance help on here.  Please go take a look over the actual policy for Medicare.   http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/insurance/cmsID,8238/mode, content/ Do keep us posted as to her progress in this! ~ Best wishes ~
