Hepatitis C and Gastric Bypass

Hi I have wanted gastric bypass for several years now. A few years ago, I saw 4 surgeons here in Southeast Michigan. Everyone of the surgeons denied me because of my Hep C status. A few of them said, if I would go on treatment, it could be a possibility. Here I am a year after treatment and I have been denied once again. I was wondering if anyone else has Hep C and who they went to etc. From my understanding it has to do with malnutrician. I can tell you that with my weight, I am having problems walking because I am all of a sudden retaining lots of water. I think it's the Hepatitis but can't be sure. My PCP says that it's arthritis and the surgery would really help me. I don't know my status of my Hepatitis right now. I do know I have mild cirrohis. Can anybody help me with a surgeon who will perform this surgery with someone who has Hepatitis C and has it somewhat under control?  I would think it would help me more than hinder me. Sally

Hi Sally, maybe look for a surgeon at a mediocal center--a teaching hospital.............like at u of m etc.  Often those surgeons are willing to take on people with additional risk factors............just a thought......and of course, i love my surgeon, although i understand he is moving to the west...... (St. Joseph)...rae

Would Lap Band be a better option for you?  You don't have the malabsorption  with Lap band.
