Hi, I was diagnosed with Gerd in July.  I had extreme chest pain, which I still do get.  Doctor put me on prilosec.  My question is, does it go away after WLS?  I am having the surgery in February or March-still doing the 12 month thing required for BCBS. Erica

Hi Erica, I had GERD before surgery and was also put on Prilosec.  Post op, it did go away for about a year, now I occasionally have to take an OTC Prilosec because I get a little bit of acidy feeling.  This happens probably once a week or so, and not anything like it was before surgery.

I had GERD really bad before surgery.  I was on aciphex and protonix and STILL occasionally took something OTC along with it (depending on what I ate).  I have not taken anything for GERD since surgery.  I have only had ONE incident and that was because I ate something really greasy, late....bad, I know.  But things that triggered it on a regular basis don't bother me now.  Of course, I don't eat NEARLY as much of those things (high acid foods or grease laden foods) as I used to.  Hopefully, you will get some relief from GERD, as well.  Good luck!  Tina

Oh yeah this goes away with WLS. I had it really bad prior to surgery and I woke up from surgery and it as magically gone. Every once in awhile I will get heartburn but nothing like before. Suzanne

Mine was so bad that I had surgery to correct it back in 06.  Because of the surgery "Nissen Fundoplication" I was not a candidate for the lap band so I went with the sleeve.  It's been two weeks, and I'm reflux free.  It did start to come back a little bit so I mentioned this to my doctor and when he was in their doing the VSG, he said the Nissen did loosen up and he threw a few stiches in there to tighten it up.

So their are options if you do not respond to meds.

WLS saved me also from the Gerd gods.  I thought I would die from the pain I had before surgery.  I haven't had one episode since. Jenn

Thank you all for responding.  I have an appointment next month with my pcp, and I am going to see what can be done.  I hate this pain.

I slept in a chair the last 6 months before surgery because of gerd. I was on Prevacid 3x daily. If I tried to lay down I would get sick immediately.....I had surgery RNY  9-5-07..I have not had heartburn one time since And I am back to sleeping in bed. My doctor took me off the meds the day I had surgery..If that is all this surgery corrected I would be happy. I am also down 35 lbs in 6 weeks. .
