Mother-In-Law

Wouldn't ya know, just when my balloon in launching, someone has to stick a pin in it.   I don't know if it is just the fact she is my mother-in-law but I told her my good news with my date of surgery....and the first thing out of her mouth was......"sure we can't change your mind, this is so radical"   I would like her to carry around over a hundred extra pounds, try to lose it over and over again over a 20 year period, watch your father die from being morbidly obese.....I think some people should just keep there mouth shut and encourage and support not judge.  Good thing I did just that.....

Hi Beth!
Don't let your MIL discourage you. You will get people who will try to talk you out of this surgery, but just ignore them. This is for YOU - and it will make a whole lot of difference in your life and your health. A couple weeks before my surgery my only son tried to talk me out of the surgery, I was so bummed....but I told him it was for ME, and I was going to do it regardless of what he thought.....I really think he was afraid for me and that he might lose me (I am his only parent since his Dad died
7 yrs ago.) I think he is proud of me now and all I've accomplished and I've gotten along just great.....he just isn't one to say it to my face, but he tells others. LOL

Good luck and stand firm!

There are going to be a LOT of people who will make comments like that.  You're going to need to grow thicker skin and come up with a list of come-backs to their snide comments.  I'm sure your MIL didn't mean it in a nasty way --- maybe she was just concerned that it's a major surgery and you'll have to undergo so many changes in your life.   You should have just said back to her:  "Yes, it is radical.  But I'm happy about my decision and I wish you would be too."   or   "Nope, there's no changing my mind now - I'm determined to get healthy so I can life a long and happy life." Don't let it get you down! Pam

Basically that is what I said to her.....then said "Just wanted you to know the date, if you wanted to be there with hubby for support"...she changed her tune. She has more of a harder time with me maybe becoming malnourished.  I offered for her to attend a support group session and meet some individuals who have had this done.  Don't get me wrong.....I love my MIL, always been very close....so I think she feels even more comfortable talking to me honestly.....I will just keep reassuring her and those around me. Thanks, everyone for the support.....just needed to vent a little! Beth
