I'm done throwing my fit! So what happens after failed sleep study?
I know I have the next study adorning the latest in fashionable facial appendages. I recall reading somewhere that they monitor you for a month? What does that entail? Routine sleep studies? I am expecting that the 2nd sleep study won't be my last and just want to get prepared.
Also - will they give you a sleeping pill if you ask? What about breath right nasal strips - can you wear them? (I sometimes get a stuffy nose on the side I am laying on.) Is there anything else I need to know, do or prepare for?
TIA!
Hi Gwen
You definately were not having a fit.
This is uncharted waters to you and you are understandably concerned. If you need to get something to help you sleep for this test, you will need to get from your PCP, but.....BENADRYL/tylenol p.m. WORKS WONDERS AND IS SAFE. Just bring a comfy pillow from home. And yes, that test will probably be your last. yippeee!!!! they just need to get some 'figures' to find out how to set your machine....
take care, my four year is being herself and needs her mommy.....gotta go!!!!

I didn't hear anything about this monitoring for a month thing. I just got my CPAP this week, so if that is the case.. it will be a month from then? ARGH. I do have another appointment with my sleep doctor the first week of April.. maybe after that and I tell her how much I LOVE my CPAP (read: tolerate) she will release for surgery.
That is good advice about bringing your own pillow. I did that, and I am glad. Their pillows were all flat. I was EXCITED to see a fan in the room when I got there tho.. I sleep with one, so I was worried I would freak without one. The tech said that is common.. so that is why they have em! Ha.
The lady at Wright and Fillipis where I got my CPAP was all impressed that BCBS bought the machine outright instead of just renting it.. so I guess if my apnea resolves, the machine is mine to keep? I dunno.
Again, good luck.. remember it's just a hurdle to get over to get to surgery day!!
Jodie & Gwen,
This one month monitoring has me puzzled. I went to the sleep lab 2x, then I went to w & p, got my machine, and never looked back. My pcp asked how I was sleeping when I saw him next, I said fine, and nothing has been said since...???? I never even had to see a 'sleep' doctor at all. I do know that the cpap machine 'records' data for your doctor. I wonder if that is something they will have you send to him ???
I have a cpap machine sitting in my closet for the last 9 months. just like new. Insurance paid for it, its too bad I dont need it any longer....
I have had 2 sleep studies. My first one and then one about 5 years later to adjust my setting. I know my sister in law had 2 like you are having, and then her machine was delivered.
I do have to check out a oxygen monitor about every 6 months to wear at night for one night just to make sure my oxygen level are up when I am sleeping. Its no biggy, it just clips on your finger.
Best of luck
Pam

Sarah -
This was on my vent post....and I have read it elsewhere - maybe someone's blog???
Hi Gwen, {{{BIG HUG}}}
The same thing happened to me. They will place the cpap and then moniter you. If there is an improvement they will order you a cpap machine that insurance will pay for and then you have to use it for month before the sleep Dr will release you for surgery.
I am expecting for this all to take a while... I will not assume I have passed a hurdle until I am told from now on. Thanks for the info!
Gwen
Gwen, don't worry about the sleep study. I had it done and the first one is to see if you have sleep apnea and the second one is to set the machine and see how you tolerate it. After the second test, your sleep Dr. will get the information and when you see him for a follow up visit, he will give you the prescription for the machine. BSBC pays for it and Wright and Fillipis is where I got mine. I had to see the sleep Dr. each month for the first few months. You bring in the card from the machine and he reads it. The card tells them how many hours you kept the machine on and how long each night. the c-pap takes a little getting used to, but once you use it for awhile, it gets better. And just think after the surgery, and you loose weight, you can get rid of the thing!! At least that is what I am banking on. Good Luck
