Any one go to Hurley Hospital to have there surgery?
I went through Hurley. I was banded 2 weeks ago today and I don't have any complaints. I stayed only one night and they keep you in the burn unit, but the burn patients are on the oposite side of the wing from the bariatric patients. The staff was curtious and pleasant and I didn't have a problem. I got up and walked and walked and made sure I was doing everything I was suppose to be doing. Hurley is just as good as some of the newer hospitals, maybe better?? It is a teaching hospital, so they are thorough in everything they do, and I think that is a good thing. The only down side is the area that it is located, you don't want to make a wrong turn down the wrong road around there. It is a safe hospital it is just located in an iffy area. Hope this helps. Good luck in your journey and you are in good hands.

The hospital stay itself -- -pretty much a non-event. You're out of it from surgery and not there long enough for it to make much of a difference. It was fine and the staff did what they needed to do. Don't remember much of my stay, actually.
The Bariatric Center is where all your aftercare will take place. The staff is helpful and knowledgeable for the most part and they are pretty quick in responding to any questions you have if you need to call the office after surgery. Wait times are crazy, so plan to bring something with you to keep your hands busy in the waiting room.
You can check out my OH Profile and my Blog (link in siggy) and check back to my surgery date for posts about my surgery experience. Had surgery on November 13, so check for the week following.
Take these last few weeks before surgery and use it to be as productive as possible. Start your exercise routine now, begin eating the types of foods you'll need to eat after surgery, figure out your vitamin and supplement choices (lots of info on my blog and profile about this) and READ, read, read as much as you can about life after surgery. Read as many profiles here on OH as you can. Re-read WLS for Dummies -- or buy the book if you haven't already. Learn about everything you can get your hands on. The more knowledge you have about this whole process, the easier things will be for you.

I was in Hurley twice, once for my surgery and once for a complication from the surgery and each time it was awful. I will never go back there again. Both times I was almost given the wrong meds but I noticed just in time. They also woke me up in the middle of the night to give me a huge pill which wasn't crushed and luckily I noticed that too and told them that I couldn't take that. The nurses were rude and very nasty. The place was dirty. I will say my surgeon was very good but the hospital was terrible. The staff was so unprofessional. They seemed like they were parting all night long. Laughing and carrying on. I have stayed at Genesys too and what a world of difference. Just thought I would let you know. If you would like to talk about it, I don't mind if you caledl me. I will give you my phone number if you email me. Just let me know. I had my surgery 7/30/07 and I was back in 10/07. I had an open RNY.
