Same old question......
Ok old timers, I need your help.
Since my two year follow up visit at the end of March I have gained 18 lbs. I haven't changed what I was eating...the only change in my life is I started going to the gym around that time.
I talked with my PCP recently who said that this much of a gain is not "muscle vs. fat" or even a case of me eating what I shouldn't. I broke down in her office and sobbed "I have dessert some times!" She laughed and said that I would have to really work hard at eating a heck of a lot of junk food to have gained that much, especially since I'm working out regularly. She said she could see if I wasn't actively losing, but to keep gaining like that is weird. She ordered a thyroid blood test....but that was last week and I haven't heard anything yet.
I know I've posted this before, but every time I get on the scale and it keeps going up and up and up. I was 319 pre-op and this morning I weighed 218.5. If I go above 220 I'm going to just die.
Has this happened to anyone?? I don't want to sound cavalier but I have the protein, water, exercise, nutrition stuff down. I just can't think of anything that would cause this. My NUT says it's not unheard of and to switch up my exercise routine, which I am doing.
Any experience you've had with this will make me feel a little less crazy.....

I know your upset. I am sorry!!! This has to be so hard on you! I feel your pain even though I have not gained back that much weight at one time.
I think you should definately get your blood work tested and see what is going on with that. Also are you retaining water? Do you have high blood pressure? Are you stressed out and emotionally eating? Maybe you can keep a journal of EVERYTHING that you eat everyday. Sometimes that shocks us.
I know it doesnt help much but please know you are in my thoughts!!!

I don't have any answers for you because it sounds like you're doing everything right .
But I wanted to commend you for taking action. GOOD JOB!! It's great that you've seen the doctor and nutritionist and you're being proactive with the gaining by having your labs checked ---- think about when we were gaining weight before surgery. 18 pounds would be nothing and we would have ignored it, but now you're taking action to get it under control. That's great!
BTW -- your lab work on the thyroid test should be done by now. Call the office and ask to get a copy of your results -- which will then prompt them to make sure the doc sees a copy too.
Keep us posted on how you do...

Brenda,
I did the same thing about 18 months after the surgery...Dr ordered some bloodwork , it was my thyroid. I felt so tired , crabby...well I'm like that all the time..lol After that, all was well and I started losing again. BTW...I met you on Saturday...your face was taped to a ruler...you looked pretty darn thin too me...all kidding aside...I hope they figure out what's going on and good luck

LOL Maria....yep, I sure do "get around"!
I'm going to check on my bloodwork and see what's up.
Thanks for the reply!
****Edited at 7:40pm***************
Called my PCP and thyroid test came back fine. DH has a theory that I'm "starving" myself by not getting enough calories and protein and then doing more exercise than I ever have before so my body is whacked out and holding on to everything. I don't know.....I guess I'll up my protein again and see how it goes.

DH might be right. If you aren't getting enough calories, spread throughout the day, you might be over compensating at night. I know I can sure tell when I haven't eaten enough during the day, because look out when I come home. I'm lible to eat small children if they are in my way.
Pam is right, you are on the right path by being so proactive. Many people just ignore the gains and pretend that they aren't happening.
You always inspire us all because you show us both the good and hard parts of being a WLS post op.
I'm confident that you will figure this out. We are all right here behind you, supporting you. Please keep us updated.

Thank you guys for answering me.....I knew I could count on you.
I am going to try to do a protein shooter at night and keep track of what I'm doing during the day.
You know what else I figured out? Protein "aint" cheap! We are doing that new home budget program and I just don't want to eat all that yucky beans and rice and stuff the guys are eating. That may be part of the problem, too. I'm not really eating dinner and then eating something different from them late at night. I also work out pretty late at night (like 10pm).
Anyway, I'll give it all a try and let you know! Thanks again girls!

Edit -
I see know. - funnin' - No offense taken.
Things I must say are different now thanks to Sally-cellphone. Since my accident I've been told I'm a different person. "It's almost like one switch was turned off and another turned on" - by a long time associate. I think he meant I'm less humorous. I actually don't see the difference but others have commented the same. Not to visit any of this on you or other members of the board but I guess I have lost interest in most things. CHIs suck. Headaches suck.
I get asked regularly though for help and at Jon's some concerns about WLS were brought up. I offer what Schuhknecht gave me every time.
Anyway, no offense taken.
