xPost: When did you try your protein samples?
I have a number of sample packs of protein powders and bullets. From what I understand on these boards, our tastes will differ pre-op to post-op. Is it really necessary for me to try them BEFORE surgery? I'd hate to "waste" such expensive products when I don't need them pre-op. What are your thoughts? I'd appreciate any insight!
Thanks!
Michele
ETA: These were NOT free samples. Rather, they are individual serving sized packets sold online so that I could try them before I buy a boatload that I might HATE

Hi Michele,
Not only did my tastes change pre-op to post-op, I'm still experiencing changes. If you are thinking consuming things pre-op just to know what to stock up on post-op, I would definitely recommend holding off. Also, just because you like something / don't like something one month out, that may very well change at four months out.
For me, it was a matter of what I was willing to tolerate the first couple months just to get my protein levels in -- for instance, now I would never down one of those bullets unless I was stuck somewhere with no food protein choices or was so sick that would be the only way to get the protein in. I also happen to like a number of whey protein powders, and the flavors I now keep around had expanded over the months.

Yep, I would keep them until after surgery. Everything I tasted right after was so sweet I couldn't stand it. Plus, I was lactose intolerant for about 2 weeks. Go figure.
So keep your samples and experiment post op. IMHO it will keep you from being bored with liquids if you get to try new things. I would stock up on chicken broth, crystal light, and sf popcicles and that's about it. Once you find something you like as far as suppliments go you can order more of it.

Definitely keep them for after surgery. Don't bother with anything before hand. HOWEVER -- the first 10 days after surgery you're probably gonig to have this strange metallic taste in your mouth that will make everything taste funky. It's leftover anesthesia. Sometimes it takes a few days - sometimes it takes a couple weeks. So even if you hate something on day 2 don't give up on it totally - you might like it again a few weeks down the road.
I actually drank protein shakes before my surgery as part of my dieting efforts. I used Body Fortress (from Wal-Mart) and it was fine for me. Right after surgery I HATED it. Gag! But about 2 months after surgery I tried it again and loved it. Go figure.
Good luck with your surgery
