Hey Kristy,

The Booky Joint is one of my DH and my favorite places to go when we are in Traverse City. We have been going there for years. She has a great selection of used books.  Hope all is well with you.

Phyllis,
You'll have to say hello to Jan for me if you stop in - my mom, Nancy is her cousin.  She
is a great person and talk about a person who's living their dream . . she is doing what
she has always wanted to do and is very happy doing it.
PS - Things are good with me - how about you?

Kristy,

I will certainly do that, Jon and I are planning a trip up there soon.
Good for her for making her dreams a reality, it is a beautiful place to do that.
Things are good here too, Jon is retiring so we are doing lots of things around the house right now. We have been spending lots of time with my parents in the last months. My dad has pancreatic cancer and is day to day now.

I love to read, but am not reading anything at the moment.  I read a lot of Nora Roberts, my DIL is a real fan and passes the books on to me when she's finished.  I went on-line and printed out the list of JD Robb books and I'm almost done with all of them.  They should really be read in order, because you get to develope the characters better.  I think I've only got 5 left to read.  I use the library...cheaper.  My girlfriend gave me three books by Nancy Thayer about the Hot Flash Club.  They were cute but not wonderful.  I need to get back to the library.  maybe today, it's a lovely rainy day so I need something to do.
I should really rip down the wallpaper in the kitchen, but just can't face all that work.
I can't believe how poorly I eat.  I've been using fitday as my food journal.  I'm usually ok in the calorie and protien counts, but the fats and carbs are out of site.  It's helping me to realize what are good choices and which are bad.  I never realized how many carbs are in things like canteloupe.  I love fruit and I think there are way too many carbs in it.  how many carbs are we limited to in a day?  I can't find it in my binder.
Well, I've blabed enough for today.

Jan - interesting you're asking about carbs in fruit.  I was just googling it to see how sugars in fruit vs refined sugars affect us.  Unfortunately I don't have an answer yet.  There were several opinions posted - some say natural (fruit) sugars are good, some say a "sugar is a sugar".  There's the fructose vs sucrose issue - and fructose (natural) breaks down into sucrose for energy.  Its better for you because you don't get the spike of sugar, but it releases and processes into your system slower whereas sucrose (refined) make your pancreas work harder and releases more into your system at a time, thus the "sugar crash".  That's all I've gleaned from it so far.

I LOVE watermelon and have been consuming quite a bit of it.  My girlfriend said she is starting the South Beach Diet and they say no "watermelon, bananas or pineapple" because of the sugar contents.

I would love to know the answer to this too.  Especially for WLS patients.

Watermelon, bananas, pineapple...three of my favorites.  This is going to be much harder after wls than I had hoped.  I'm still going through with it, and I'm still going to make it work!

Jan,
This past weekend, I ate a half of a watermelon all by myself.  No dumping, only some blood sugar spikes.  Which I am insulin-dependent so I expected that.  My friend eats fresh pineapple daily post op, and I have had sooo many bananas post wls.  [no comments plz!!]  You will find your way, I promise.  Honestly, two yrs out is a lot harder for most.  The first year is a breeze.  I want that year back!!!  I would work harder, cuz it wasn't that hard afterall!!!

plus you know we are all in this together ;)

Man BM, I'm bummed out now...I was hoping that my insulin dependence would go away when I lose weight?  Did you reduce your insulin dependence at all?  That's one of my co-morbidities and they said wls would greatly reduce my need for meds.  I guess these doubts get more intense the closer you get to surgery.  For dinner tonight I had a lean pork chop and a cup of cottage cheese.  For today I'm at calories 1,074  fats 44.8  carbohydrates 99.3 and protien 66.5.  Like I said, my calories and protiens are good, the fats and carbs are what's killing me.  I'm going to keep working on it tho.  I guess no toast for bfast and no pizza for lunch certainly would help eh?

Jan,
I forgot to mention that I have been a Type I Diabetic since I've been 19 yrs old.  I will be 40 next month.  And yes, I am down to a 1/3 of insulin of what I used to need.  BUT I have a friend who started taking Metformin about one month before Rny and never needed it after.  So do not lose hope!  I have toast for bfast and pizza for dinner still.  Not everyday, but don't think you have a life sentence of no carbs.  Its a balancing act.  So, I dont miss the sweet cuz I never had them anyways, but the low carbs is very difficult.  You are already making great decisions Jan.  Take it one meal at a time.  And relaxxxxxxx,,,,,,breathe....
