Dear Ashley,
Thanks so much for friending me on here and also for all of the information. I have high anxiety and I absolutely hate not knowing what to expect...you have eased some of my fears.
I will definitely have the staff order my pain meds and get them filled while I am still in the hospital. Thanks for the tip...
This morning my friend called to tell me that she is having her sleeve done on April 30th...5 days after me! lol I always have to be the guinee pig!
Do not apologize for taking the time to write to me, I was excited to see that you had answered my questions.
stay beautiful and we will chat later...thanks again,
Susie

Hi Suzy, congrats on getting a surgery date! I had VSG surgery at Harper by Dr.Hendrick. You can go to Dr.Webbers surgeon page here http://www.obesityhelp.com/profiles/bariatric-surgeon/dr-joh n-webber/ and there are reviews from other patients who had him, that's how I contacted others who had my surgeon.

I was kinda nervous when I surgeon switched to Harper because from some reviews I read they said that they had bad experiences with the staff. I am happy to say that mine was not like that! The nurses and everyone there were so nice and caring, anything I needed they gave me.

Day of surgery I got there around 5am (I think lol) signed in and sat in the waiting room for about 10minutes then they had me sign papers, after that they took me to get changed into my hospital gown, and be prepared you will get asked the same questions about 100 times before surgery.

After that I went into this big room that had other patients (people there for all different things) they had me get into the stretcher and started hooking up my IV's and asking me more questions, they closed the curtains for me and gave me a nice warm blanket, around that time my surgeon came in and talked to me, he made sure I had lost the amount of weight he asked me too (if you don't he will not preform surgery) and told me everything will be alright, it was nice he did because it made me feel at ease, they also give you medication that will help you relax.
I waited around a little bit, I think that was one of the worst parts, laying there looking around wondering how surgery will go. Finally they wheeled me into the surgery room, I climbed on the table, they asked me my name, age, dob, what surgery I was having again, next thing I was fading out.

When I woke up in recovery I remember them asking me how I felt and I said "Uhhhh I'm going to puke!!" I didn't, but that made medicine made me feel like I was the whole time, they gave me some meds that help with nausea though.

I had my own room and it was a nice size. They had on the table next to my bed a container with shampoo, conditioner, lotion, a big thing of pampers soft baby wipes, toothbrush and paste, mouthwash, and a few other things I cant think of at the moment. I had a little bag with all of the same things they gave me, I think I just ended up using there's. They also gave me a cute little Harper DMC pillow.

I brought a ton of magazines, I tried to look at one a few hours after surgery and couldn't even focus. The only things I can say I used were my pajamas, my phone and charger, hand sanitizer, baby wipes or cleansing wipes for face, toothbrush, mouthwash, chapstick and slippers.

Make sure you have a nice pillow with you for the ride home, the potholes were horrible! Also make sure you pick up for pain meds in advance, I regret not doing so! I had to on the way home from the hospital and I was in a lot of pain by then waiting at the drive threw pharmacy, good thing its just down the street!

Sorry I wrote so much! I'm sure there's tons of typos (sorry!) but if you have any other questions feel free to message me! Good luck with surgery, and wishing you a speedy recovery!

Topic: Has anyone had Dr. John Webber for their surgeon?
Hello everyone,
I am scheduled for my RNY on April 25,2012 and I am so excited. My surgeon is Dr. John Webber at DMC Harper. Has anyone else had their surgery at the DMC Harper? If so, please tell me what I should expect...I have anxiety (I really do) and I hate not knowing what to expect.
Also, what should I bring to the hospital with me?
Is it really as bad as some people tell me? I am talking about the getting used to not eating and the liquid vitamins and all.

I appreciate any and all responses to my questions.
Sincerely,
Susie

Welcome Dawn,

My name is Susan and I have been a member since 2004, but I am scheduled to have my RNY done on April 25th. I was denied twice in the past and I was finally approved after another appeal last month.
My surgeon is Dr. John Webber at DMC Harper.
I am also looking for people in our local area for support, wisdom and sharing.

I will friend request you and we can keep in touch.
How are you doing after the surgery?

Susie

Thanks Sheryl. I appreciate the note!

I'm doing well, now just over two weeks out. No complications so far and I wake up every day thanking God for that and praying for another day. I was a moderate risk patient because of a minor clotting issue, but it wasn't significant enough to keep me from surgery. I had preoperative tests and consulted a hematologist first.

My biggest problem so far, has nothing to do with my stomach. It's my head. I am struggling with the loss of food and having to cook dinner for my family and watch everyone else enjoying it. Guess it shows how addicted I am to it. I have not had cravings out of now where,  so much as it just smells good, looks good and then I want it...old habits are hard to break I guess. I'm learning to "strategize" and if I need to leave, I do. My family and friends understand.  I'm trying not to be too hard on myself over it realizing that they did surgery on my stomach and not my head. I went in a 300lb woman addicted to food and came out the same person, but with a physical restriction (which I definitely needed). I have followed all Dr. Krause and Zalesin's orders perfectly. And I don't worry so much about this first year, during the honeymoon...I know it will be good. I worry about later on.

So, if I could ask you anything it would be, did you experience these feelings and how did you overcome them in the long run and maintain your weight? I have been told the cravings never really go away but you learn to work around them. I would appreciate any advice. It makes me doubt myself, like I wasn't ready for the surgery, but I knew I had to do something. But now is when the real work starts, on my mind.

Sorry for rambling. Can you tell I need support?  LOL  I dd go to the support group at the Weight Control Center this week. It was good.

Also, how do you keep your protein intake up? I'm drinking ISOPURE, some products from the weight control center, etc, but it's still really tough. I hope it gets better after I can eat more solid foods, i.e. meat.

Thanks for the help!

Welcome Dawn. I have not been on here in a very long time, but am glad that I signed on today to see your post.  I, too, had Dr Kevin Krause. He is amazing.  I am nealy 5 years out, and have had fantastic results. I don't know what info you are looking for, but I am happy to help with any questions that you may have. Good luck, and let me know how I can help you.
