Question

It has been FOREVER since I posted here.  I am unfamiliar with this site.  Anyway, I have am pre-op for RNY and just have a question.  I have had my information seminar with Dr. Gersin, my consultation, gotten my 5 year medical history for BC/BS and made appts for my fitness evaluation, psychological evaluation and my nutritional counseling. All I have left is the sleep study and....well the surgery!  Today, when I talked with Dr. Gersin we discussed my medical history which  includes 3 c-sections, a lap appendectomy and a lap gallbladder removal.  He said the only problem I have is that sometimes after several surgeries, your intestines can become 'stuck' together.  At this point, RNY is impossible. There is no way to tell before surgery.  My sister, who had RNY on '07 at the same practice said that she believes that Dr. Gersin is telling me what COULD happen because he wants me to be aware of it and that he wants to assure me that my safety is top priority.  I had not heard this before.  But I was curious if there was anyone who has had this many procedures and still had a successful RNY?  Also, on the chance that someone is a patient of Dr. Gersin, did he mention this to you or is it common for him to warn of things like this?  I have a tendancy to over analyze things...:) Thanks in advance!  Beth

I havent had my surgery yet either but my doctor told me that because of my other surgerys(colon surgery and herina repair) that my intestince may be "stuck " to the mesh they used to repair my herina. He also said he would not know until he "got in there". He said if there was a problem he would do something like a gastric sleave and then when I got skinny he would do a open surgery and finish the rest of the RNY.....I dont think your surgern ment it was inpossible maybe just that it was impossible to do it lap...?...hope that helps...~Mary~

Prior to weightloss surgery...I had 3 vertical c-sections and a extremly large hernia repair done (4 large hernias)It was vertical also .  I have mesh in me also.  Part of my wls had to be done open but it is only a 5 in*****ision. I was 99% sure it would be done open  and I still said do it. I have had NO problens. 3 days after surgery I went Christmas shopping. I was  sore for close to a week but the more I moved the better I felt.  My Dr. never said it could not be done. He said it most likely would have to be done open. He was more concerned about the huge hernia I still have in my lower belly area.  Good luck Beth on what ever you decide. Myrtis

That makes me feel better...I am not really concerned about it having to be open.  I would be willing to have them do that.  It just makes me feel better that someone with similar medical history has had a successful surgery.  LIke I said, I tend to over analyze things....LOL.  Most likely, he was just telling me a possibility of what could happen.  I just take things to heart and it is a lot of money to spend to NOT have the surgery in the end.  Two of my c-sections were also vertical.  Thanks for the answer! Hi Beth -

I had my Lap RNY done at Duke last summer. I was also warned that my previous Lap Gallbladder surgery could pose a problem, but they thought all would be fine. It was. I think your Dr. is doing exactly what your sister said ... He's letting you know that there is a possibilty you might have to have an open procedure, but that they will try to do it lap first.

I look forward to seeing you on the board more as you travel this road to a healthier you.

Barb
