insurance hurdle BCBSNC PPO
I've been told insurance co requires a 5-year weight history and I just got a call from my surgeon's office and they say they have received my medical records but I am missing 2005! Said they would have to have it since I have BCBS. Anyone else had a missing year and got approved anyway? I'm not one to visit a dr regularly, more on an as needed basis, but surely I saw someone in 2005 for something, right? Would BCBS keep records of claims made in 2005 and might I get the information from them? Thanks for any and all help!
Pamela
You can get away with only 4 years, I did. I dont even think they noticed I was missing a year... BCBS requires you to meet 4 of the 5 years for their criteria anyways. If you have other Drs you saw - like an OBGYN you can get records from their office as well... or any other Dr, ER visit.
Yes BCBS would keep records of claims - from 2005 you will more than likely have to send a request in writing and they would have something like 30-45 days to respond (maybe longer, I dont remember off hand). They cannot give you claim information over the phone unless you can give them 2 pieces of information relating to the claim - something like date (or date range), dr you saw, reason for visit/diagnosis.

Do you have any comorbidities (diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure) - if so, you don't even need 5 years history. Also, they do not have to be consecutive years, just 5 years showing you were obese. BC/BS PPO is the greatest, I was approved overnight!
Good luck!

I have a new philosophy, I'm only going to dread one day at a time. Charlie Brown
I was approved with only 4 out of 5 years also...and they were non-consecutive! If you have a documented weight from say 2002, 2001, etc. that might help. If I'm remembering correctly, I had 2001,2005,2006,2007. Best of luck to you. BCBSNC PPO is probably the most forward-thinking insurance company on this issue. I don't feel that you'll have any problems.
