Depression

Hey everybody.  Just needed to come here to vent (again!!).  I don't know what is wrong with me lately but it feels like I just stay down in the dumps and depressed all the time anymore.  My life is good.  I have a wonderful relationship with Scott, we are putting in an offer on a great home tomorrow, my son is great and doing very well in school, I am starting a new job tomorrow which I am both excited and nervous about.  My point is, I have absolutely nothing to be depressed about but that's exactly how I am feeling right now.  WHAT THE HECK IS THE MATTER WITH ME????? Seems like since I've had surgery I stay so moody and depressed.  Anybody else notice anything like this since surgery?  I should be thrilled with my weight loss and my life in general but I can't seem to enjoy any of it anymore.  Maybe I'm just weird. . .

((((Donna)))),

While everyone knows that I struggle with depression, I have to say that I don't think that my WLS has impacted my depression. I'm not sure if it's impacting yours or if your depression is just coincidental. Either way, if you haven't seen a mental health professional yet, please do. You have had a year filled with incredible joys and incredible challenges. If you are also having some chemical imbalances that are in the mix, it can make it difficult to see the glass half full.

donna I went thru something similar about 6 months out form rny.  My PCP put me on some Lexapro and that has made a huge difference.  I don't know if it was related tot he surgery or not but I feel that I had used food as a coping mechanism for so long and then it wasn't there anymore so when the world started coming in on me I had problems.  I would at least talk to my Dr about it if I were you.  It never hurts to get some advice and alot of times just talking to someone helps.  It sounds like your life is going great and I am so happy for you.  My depression conincided with my sons diagnosis with autism so I pretty much knew where it was coming from but we use food so much as a crutch and with that no longer a possibly in stressful times it throws a kink in the whole situation.  I wish you the best of luck!  I'm here if you need to talk! I have suffered from depression for the last 11 years and food was my crutch.  I saw a medical professional and found out that I have an inherited chemical imbalance.  I took medication for it up until my surgery.  I have not had to take any since but my chemical imbalance has self corrected since the surgery.  See a mental health professional.  Try to increase your walking each day.  This increases the serotonin level in your brain which will help with the depression.  Just know that all of us on the NC board are here for you.  Depression is an illness not a handicap.

Donna,  I agree with all of the above and also want to add that you might want to have your PHP check your hormone level.  Your body has went thru a lot of changes......we can see the outside but it's harder to see the inner ones.  I have been on depression meds since 1988, and since the surgery, the same pill doesn't seem to be doing the job anymore.......I often feel dizzy and this past Sat. honestly thought I was going to pass out......yeah, I know......PHP, lol.  Hope everything turns out for you......keep us posted with what he says!! Nancy
