Birth control..Weight Gain

Ok so last month I didn't take my BC pills...not trying to get pregnant..Nope Nope Nope.  My last baby is graduating this Friday and there is a light at the end of my tunnel.  In any event the month I did not take them my weight drop several pounds and I wasn't hungery at all though I did eat things I shouldn't have espically at my nieces funeral as we stayed at her family home and there was all foods imaginable and not much makes me sick but I still dropped weight.  I got down to 147!  Ok so now I am into my second week of being back on Birth Control pills and I am up 5 pounds and battleing hunger  espically jaw breakers LOL.  They are a weekness.  I don't understand it.  I know I am full but in about 10 minutes I feel like I need more.  Ok so I went to my year check up at Pitt and of course his scale had me down 98 pounds since my surgery last June 6.  Yes I am past what they expected me to lose though he said my weight average at my age of 46 is 137 and his scale says 153.  I told him how usually I lose only during my period and than how I went off the pill and what happen and now I am back on them how I gained.  He said that that was normal for the BC pill and was most likely just fluided.  Butt he said to watch the hunger and eating to much cause it wouldn't take just a couple of times to stretch my pouch which would increase my hunger each time cause it would take more to fill it.  YIKES!!!!  I hope I haven't done this.  Could this be why I am hungry now.  I haven't been following my water like I should and I have drank to soon or alittle at meals can this be it also.  Or I wonder if it is just the pills.  He said it could just be that and not unusual.  Ok so what kind of Birth Control doesn't do these things other than castration LOL.  Has anyone changed BC since surgery cause of this issue or experiance any of this?  It makes me want to trash my pills but one or two things, ages 17 and 22 have shown me pregnancy causes weight gain also!!!

I recently go the depo shot, and have noticed a huge increase in my appetite. I do not give into it but it is hard. I can't do the bc pills so my only choice at this point was the shot. I know there is the iud but my insurance will not cover any form of bc. My doctor told me it is very hard to stretch the pouch and you really have to pu**** for that to take place? I measure all of my food and never drink with my meals. My nut said to make sure you are getting fiber in your diet to help with the hunger.  it's a constant battle that is for sure............we can do it............ You LQQK wonderful by the way.....................

I have the IUD...the copper one and am coming up on my 10 years now I think so he said this year he will take it out and put a new one in. I have only had three periods since surgery in the 11 months and I am thinking I am perimenapausal now. I am 45 years old so not sure if it's that or just the weight loss. I used to be regular but since surgery have no clue when I will get a period. Anyhow, the only set back of the copper IUD is a heavier flow, but I will sacrifice to not have weight gain. There is another IUD but I don't know much about it. Good luck with all of this.  Lisa

I'd recommend one of the IUD's.  I have Paragard, the copper non-hormonal one that lasts 10 years.  There is also the Mirena, which produces *localized* hormones (supposedly) that are not supposed to affect eating or food desires.  I've heard of some people who say it has, but not many.  The Mirena lasts for 5 years, and gives almost no periods.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Mirena IUD. I'm approaching my five years with it and I will have it removed and get another one. It has never affected my weight or appetite. The best "side effect" is having no period!!!!

I started taking birth control pills in December and noticed my appetite increased like crazy.  I don't find myself eating a ton more in volume, but I have increased some.  Instead, what I see is that I graze alot.  I was just considering yesterday going off of them again and looking for something else.  My weight loss has slowed down considerably, which I know it does at a year+, but I am wondering if the pill has something to do with it.  Anyway, that's my two cents.  Let us know what happens. Take care. Ellen

Ok so what kind of Birth Control doesn't do these things other than castration LOL. Each person reacts to the different birth controls differently. I suggest you speak to your OBGYN and have them help you decide what would be best. Personally I have never had an increase in appetite or weight gain on any birth control I was on - ortho tri, ortho-lo, lo-ovoral, depo provera and I am currently on seasonique.

I responded like my above post the last time I was on b/c pills, so I was reticent to take them this time around.  I have been watching, hoping the cravings and such would go away, but they haven't.  I will make an appt with my ob/gyn to discuss changes, but I definitely am going off of them.  I wish I responded like you have to them, I prefer them to barrier methods.  Oh well...

I've had the Mirena IUD since my daughter was born 4 years ago.  I haven't had a period since I got the IUD.  I did have very faint spotting right after surgery but just the one time.  I love my Mirena... no period, no cramps, no cravings and I really am rarely hungry.  The only time I get hungry is if I get busy/distracted and go several hours between meals.  Sorry to hear you're having this problem.  Good Luck Christy
