Pre-Surgery jitters
Hello Everyone,
I am preparing for revision surgery on Thursday. Tomorrow my husband and I will drive up to NC check into a hotel get up real early to be at the hospital at 5:30am. I am being revised from an 8 1/2 year old mini-gastric bypass to a true RNY. Dr. Bauman is my doctor and I've heard nothing but great things about his skills. For some reason the closer my surgery date gets the more jitters and worry I feel ( I know this is normal). I'm worried about coming out of anethesia and being in pain (I'm a big baby), I worry about having a drain placed in me (with my first surgery I had no drain), and about any other complications. Did many of you out there feel like this? I've already called the doctor's office to ask the nurse if it is o.k. to take a sleep aid the night prior to surgery. I know if I don't take something I will be awake all night panicking.

While I haven't had a revision, I have to say that I was a nervous wreck before my surgery. I finally calmed down the day of and did just fine. I understand that your Dr is beyond competent and I'm sure that you'll be in excellent hands.
I'll be thinking of you and keeping you and yours in my prayers,
Warmly,
Barb

Hi - you have a great doctor, especially for the delicate process of a revision. I had my drain removed before I left the hospital so I didn't have to deal with it.
The last time I was at NE Medical (for complications) they had these AWSOME suites, air mattresses,, flat panel tv's, even a place for your family to sleep if they choose so. It was nice!
I had my surgery in 2006 when they had the old rooms. I know things will be fine. Please let us know how it goes afterwards.
By the way, I was anxious and nervous right until they slipped that mask over my face and nose.
When I woke up I felt like I didn't even have surgery. This is how good it was afterwards. Ofcourse, I had proof I had surgery, but felt great. No heaving or nausea. They gave me a pain pump after surgery. Also, bring some magazines or puzzle books you will get bored. I couldn't read a book because I couldn't focus that hard.
Completely normal ... but we're going to take great care of you! They can give you something in the preop area for your nerves, too. I had to have something, trust me. I wasn't really nervous until that point ... a little anxious/nervous beforehand, you know ... that's normal. But when I got to the preop area and realized that it was "really" happening, I got real nervous. They slipped something into my IV, and I was calm after that. They will ask you if you need it, but just go ahead and let them know as soon as you get back there that you want it.
I was awake most of the night preop, too. Just so excited that I couldn't sleep. And I knew that I was about to get some real good sleep with anesthesia!
Can't wait to meet you tomorrow. I'll be saying my prayers for you tonight!

This is a major surgery that you're having done, so it's completely normal to be nervous! I was pretty much excited up until I was in the pre-op room. Then my emotions completely took over: nervous, scared, excited, sad, happy, reflective, it just went on and on. :)
You'll be OK. The things that you're truly worried about, pain, the drain, etc, are temporary. In the scheme of things, they're a drop in the bucket and will be over with very quickly. Very quickly you'll start seeing the scale move and the pain and drain will be gone...wha-la! You'll be a new person!
Good luck to you, we'll be waiting for you on the loser's bench!
