I wonder if this board doesn't get a lot of activity because people don't know about it? We are the New Mexico Bandsters, but I don't think word is out about using it. I'll keep telling others to visit and hope you all will do the same.

Topic: RE: Thinking of having Lap Band Surgery - Questions
How exciting and brave for you to be thinking of major life style changes! I commend you as I do everyone of us thinking of it or who have done it. I was wondering how much weight you actually need to lose? The lapband surgery has been great for many of us. What I particularly liked about my lapband is the fact that it was reversible, it was less invasive to my body, and there are still more options available for weight loss if more assistance is needed. I liked the idea of the band because I felt I still had absolute control over what I ate, how I ate it and how often, which are all the same variables I need anyway. The point being is that the band bacame my tool to help me with the objectives I already had to help me lose my weight. It wasn't anything permanent (although it can be). I am happy with my band. I weighed 312 and went down to 248. But I had some complications; my band became filled too tight and I wasn't able to keep much down. I didn't lose much weight after that and had to have an unfill which means there was no restriction of my band. I gained 35# back. But now I got another fill and I have good restriction and I'm eating just right for me which is about a cup of food three times a day starting with the protein source first.

I was going to have the lap band done, but my insurance would only pay for the gastric bypass surgery. I had it done on February 24, 2006 with no ill effects and have lost so far 150 pounds. You and your sister may want to look in to the gastric bypass surgery. Just a suggestion. Good Luck on whatever you decide. -Bill-

Hi Richard, I am a patient of Dr. Blackstone's and I just wanted to tell you that you are in wonderful hands! I will be 1 year postop on December 20th and have lost 125 pounds. I'm 9 pounds below the Doc's goal and 4 pounds below mine. I've gone from 17 prescription meds a day down to 4, and 2 of those 4 are at half the dosage. My blood sugars are consistently in the normal range. Don't know why this board has so little activity. I check it frequently, but it just never seems to move. Be good to yourself and if you need anything I can help you with, let me know. I'm just an email away! Judy

Topic: Thinking of having Lap Band Surgery - Questions
My twin sister and I are seriously interested in having Lap Band Surgery but are concerned with the nausea and vomiting and other side effects. Also has anyone had to pay out of pocket and if so was it expensive. Can anyone recommend a good doctor. Thank you in advance for your help. I just want to make the right decision.

Yes a support group would be great in this area. Maybe if we talked to all the people we know something might come together. I know there are people here other than you and me... Actually I know of aleat a couople people post op, and one or two pre-op people... I will see what I can do... Richard

Hi there I am new to this website and didn't realize I could post here. I guess I'll try to do it more often! I live in Rio Rancho. We're starting a lapband support group today as a matter of fact. I'm very excited. I also attend the ABQ group support for WLS in general. The majority of those folks have had gastric bypass which is great! The end results are comparable, but some of the uniqueness of each surgery may warrent some occasional subgroups. Are you in Farmington? There was another person there I think looking for a meeting. Sometimes I'm up in that area and maybe we could all get together: Hope to meet you sometime.

Topic: RE: Any Bandsters in Albuquerque?
Sorry it took me so long to write back. Did I write back? Anyway, we're having the first that I know of bandster support group today at 3 pm in Rio Rancho. I plan to go and will update on this website and the ABQ site, as well as on lapbandtalk.com site. I would like to get the word out in Albuquerque because a lot of people have gone out of State to have the band and have very little aftercare and support. The ABQ group is great and I want to continue there. But I want to have discussion in addition to the unique changes the band brings us. Call me at 249.0996 for information, and we'll plan another meeting probably just before Christmas.
