Sky--Hi I live in Reno area. I had Duodenal Switch surgery in December 2004, in Brazil with Dr. Marchesini. The total cost of this surgery including everything (hospital, plane fare, food etc.) was about $12,000. I don't know about after-care costs, because my insurance covers it. Hope this helps. If you would like to know more please email me, I would be happy to talk to you.--Raphaela

Hello Sky: I am not in Reno, but can tell you I am going to self pay in Las Vegas and the cost for Lap-RNY is 21,500.00. Lap-Band 15,000.00. Approx. 4000.00 to the surgen, 10,000.00 to the anesthesiologist and 6000.00 to the hospital for the Lap-Rny. Physch evaluation is costing me 150.00 and Surgen's office calls (4) are 75.00 ea. and then 1 every 6 mths thereafter. My PCP is going to order most of the Pre-Op tests for me so the insurance will atleast cover those. I hope this gives you some kind of ballpark. Usually all this is discussed at your Surgen's seminar. I have heard the Surgery can cost anywhere from 20-30 thousand on average. Good Luck Suzanne

Topic: This PCP is WLS Supportive
If anyone needs a really great PCP to work with through your WLS journey I'd like to recommend Dr. David Hipkin at Southwest Medical Associates, at Sunset and Green Valley Pkwy in Henderson. He is new to the area but not a new physician. He takes plenty of time with you and I was fortunate enough to be assigned to him when I switched insurance to HPN. Upon my very first visit, I announced that I was having WLS and he immediatly told me that I'd be adding 20 years to my life. He wrote me a refferal with no problem and also said he'd order any pre-op tests that I would be needing. Don't hesitate to call him if you want a no-hassle supportive PCP. Hope this helps anyone whose in need! Suzanne

Billie: Thanks for the info, I thought it would be something like that. Not quite sure what an MMPI is, but I catch your drift. Suzanne

Topic: RE: Re: Physch Evaluation
Suzanne, I haven't been thru this process yet, but I have talked to several WLS patients, and typically it seems that the psyc eval basically consist of taking a personality disorder test (sometiimes you will take two) like the MMPI and you will be asked a few general questions about your mood, state of mind, and outlook on life. They are basically looking to see if you are emotionally stable since this surgery can cause depression and mood swings in some people. In all honesty, I haven't heard of anyone who didn't pass their psyc eval. But if your Dr finds that you may not be ready, they may put you on medication for a while until they feel you are emotionally stable enough for surgery. Hope this helps. Best of Luck in your Journey, Billie*
