I would go for a soup before trying anything else. If you are going to Denny's...maybe you can order a scrambled egg.

Freindly's is probably better than Denny's. Not sure if you're going for brunch or dinner or what, but I would think that you can order a soft scrambled with a scoop of cottage cheese. You could even ask them to melt a slice of american cheese on the egg. Joanne

Hi Kitty, My family loves Denny's. We often go on a Saturday or Sunday. I get a poached egg - that's usually enough for me and everyone else gets what they want. I haven't been to Friendly's, but you can try their soup. I have usually been able to find something I can eat in most restaurants - either a plain piece of fish (I ask them to broil it and not add any sauce or butter), then I add lemon. Sometimes I get roasted chicken. If they have something like an open turkey sandwich, I get that, again, asking them to put the gravy on the side or not include it at all, and just eat the turkey without the bread. And when they ask about drinks, I just ask for water and don't drink it. At least I'm not wasting a soda or coffee! I also always have a doggie bag these days, since I can never eat the entire plate. Good luck and enjoy the day with your family! Hugs - Robin

Kitty With only being 11 days out, it's very difficult to find something to eat at these places. The only thing I can suggest is an egg white omlet. try that plain. no yellow of the egg cause it can be too heavy on your pouch. If you are allowed to have tuna, friendly's has good tuna. Marie

I would think Friendly's might be a better choice, but I have not been to Denny's in awhile. I always had soup when I was new post op and eating out. We went to Friendly's on hubby's birthday April 22 and I won't say what I ate . Kristine

Hey Kitty, What I don't understand is why your family expects you to eat "regularly" after only 11 days out of surgery? I don't know about your tolerance, but I was not up to trying much new in a new environment (like a restaurant) at that point post op. Unless you've already been to these places and know that they carry food that you could tolerate, I would be careful to be trying anything new. It would stink to have to go heave it up on a public restroom on Father's Day. Maybe just a cup of tea or some cottage cheese, to play it safe, explaining to your family that as more time goes by, it will be easier for you to eat "normally," and that normal for you will be changing anyway (as of 11 days ago!!).. Good luck! Amy

Kitty: Sounds like you may be pressuring yourself to move faster than is safely recommended. At 11 days I was on clear liquids still (my program recommended 15 days liquids before softs). I didn't got to a restaurant for 4 weeks, when I could tolerate shrimp (Good meal can be made or two from a shrimp ****tail appetizer!) These places IMHO are not a place you want to frequent EVER postop, the fried greasy foods served there may be cheap but certainly is not healthy. This lifestyle change may involve picking different places for self and family. It is of course easier if they support you! It can be a win-win situation. Gone are the days of buffets etc from my life. I tried chicken noodle soup at Friendly's once w/o noodles YUCK! so greasy made me queasy! When your out a little farther a salad may do *without fried chicken or stuff on it*, but perhaps just drinking water while other's eat. I have discovered so much joy in being w/ others vs the focus on the food...If people do not understand that is their issue, do not take that on yourself unless u want to! I assure you holidays will come and go, they may always be challenging, learning to handle them now is a great step to longterm success! I have never been in a Dennys. Bring a cheese stick w/ you if you want to eat or eat before/after and just focus on fluids.! Although an egg may be doable, watch the grease they may cook it in! or as others said cottage cheese. or nibble off of others plates even! That is my 2 cents! I wish you well! Hi, Actually , it shouldn't matter where you go--You can generrally order an omelet of some kind or soup--Personally , I order a nice normal meal (but I am nine months out--and I can eat almost anything --within reason) But, I tend to take home ALOT of doggie bags! Try to make it a habit --not to worry about what you can or cannot eat out--(there is always something that you can figure out on the menu) Try to enjoy being with your family and friends --Enjoy the company--not the food ! That way you will have a wonderful time ! I never worry where I am going--I just want to be with people I love--That makes the night out for me!--SO--ENJOY! Have a happy day! Be Blessed!
