Lap band vs RNY

I've been researching for awhile now, and trying to make a decision which surgery to have. Seems like the Lap band is a better option due to not having to reroute the bowels etc. Also, is it a better long term option and lower mortality rate than with the RNY? If anyone can share their feelings on this and experiences, that would be great. Linda

Linda, Sounds like you and Stephanie should get together... I've done a lot of bands and bypasses, and I can tell you they're both good operations. There are some instances where one or the other might be preferrable. The thing to remember is that these operations are just tools - your outcome is dependant on you regardless of which operation. The one thing I will say for sure is that the mortality rate is much lower for the band. Good luck in your decision! Dr. C

Hey Linda - I just resonded to Stephanie. I had the lap band done in July. I couldn't be happier with my decision. I've had no complications and am losing 10-12 pounds a month, which obviously is less than an RNY patient, but I am quite happy with it. One of the reasons for the surgery is to start a family in the near future, I just couldn't take on the risks of RNY. It's a wonderful procedure and believe me, I'd love to drop the weight like they do, but the band was just a better option for me. If my weight loss continues as it has been, I'll be at goal in a year. I certainly can't complain about that! Let me know if you have any questions! Melissa

Linda, I also had the LapBand and am very happy. I see that you have a low BMI. My BMI was 40 when I started and that's one reason I went for the LapBand. With "only" 100 pounds to lose, I could easily do that in one year without the risks of gastric bypass. With my preop diet I'm down 55 pounds and wearing a size 12 jeans. My surgery was in June. PS Everyone's weightloss is different. There's no telling if you'll be a fast or slow loser, but you will lose. Cathy

Thanks everyone. I am leaning toward the lapband due to having a lower BMI and less risk. The faster weight loss with the RNY is appealing, but I know I am not doing this for a quick fix. I just want to feel healthy again. Linda
