Question for Dr. Curry

Dr. Curry, I had RNY surgery one year ago. I have consistently had low pre-albumin levels. They have been in the 15-17 range with this particular labs normal range being 20-40. My total protein and albumin are normal. I just had bloodwork in October and my pre-albumin was 17.3, Total protein 6.5 (lab normal range 6.1-8.2), albumin 3.9 (lab normal range 3.6-5.0). I have 2 protein drinks per day and 3-5 oz. of protein per meal. I am still only eating 5 oz. per meal as I have 5 more pounds to lose. Should I be concerned about the pre-albumin always being low? I'm frustrated with this since I really work at getting in my protein each day. Any advice? Brenda from Greenville, OH

Brenda, I used to live in Greenville and I know Arcanum well! I wouldn't worry about a slightly low prealbumin only 1 years after surgery. It's hard to be losing weight and still have a normal prealbumin. I'd say don't sweat it. Dr. C
