Kelly's Question of the Day - Water

Ok my friends. I have a little issue here. It's the timing of the water thing. I'm still doing 30 minutes before and after meals (although I just read that I could try a 1/4 cup with meals, if I can tolerate it...maybe).

Anyhow, I am barely able to get 4 cups in (my literature says 4-6 glasses a day).

I think i'm going to have to set an alarm or something. even though I have a water bottle filled all the time (it holds 3 glassesth), I forget to have more after that.

Also, eating still takes so long (about 40 minutes for a meal) that by the time i'm ready to drink, i'm thinking, "well, crap, now I should be getting to a snack" Okay, not that extreme, but it's driving me crazy!!!!!

How do you get your water in?

One of the tricks that works for me (cause believe me I struggle with this too) is I take a water bottle with me in the car both to and from work.  I have a 1/2 hour drive each way, and I make it my goal to drink a full water bottle each way.  Ta-da!  I got half my day's water in just going to and from work.  Now that means that I am sipping that thing the entire half hour...but it works for me!

That's a good idea. I start a new job on May 2nd, and I will have a commute to do as well. Thanks!

Your surgeon's plan says you can have 1/4 cup of water with meals?  Where did you have your surgery?  This completely goes against any rules I've ever read or followed.

This is what is so frustrating to me. With everyone's programs being so different. It's not my surgeon so to speak, but the program at Toronto Western Hospital. Here's what I have, typing verbatum (sp?)

This is int he Weeks 4- Soft Diet Guidelines for Gastric Bypass Surgery from TWH

"You will slowly be able to eat more food at one meal, and therefore be able to decrease the number of times you eat. Ideally you should eat 3 meals and 1-2 small snacks per day.
Pay attention to how your new stomach pouch feels. Stop eating before you feel "full" (i'm guessing that's in quotations, because I still haven't felt the same kind of "full" that I used to).
In time you should be able to complete a meal in 20-40 minutes.
Tolerating liquids and solids in the same meal varies with people - experiment. And then, in bold, If you are able to tolerate liquids with your solids, then keep your liquid intake to 1/4 cup with meals. this will help you to avoid stretching your pouch."

Which tells me so many conflicting things. I have been told that we can't stretch our pouches, and never drink and eat. Sooooo confusing!

Interesting.  I'm not so much worried about it stretching my pouch, but more pushing food through quickly. Plus, I barf if I do it anyway as there's no room for liquid. lol

I haven't had that problem yet. I jnust threw up for the first time yesterday from eating too fast. I can't imagine what would have happened if I tried water too!! I think i'll question that at my one month.

I was told 8 glasses a day. Minimum and i usually manage that.

I don't drink during meals or for 1/2 an hour afterwards, but i do drink right up to meals. I asked the surgeon about that and he said my pouch is empty with 60 seconds of me taking a drink anyway so what difference does it make if i stop 30 minutes or 1 before eating. This allows me to get all my water in during the day and personally i think that's more important. But i NEVER EVER EVER drink with meals.

You will find that as time goes by you will be able to achieve all these goals, it's just because you are early out. Don't worry about finishing a meal, if you haven't finished in 30 minutes then walk away. Soon enough you will won't have that problem.

Hope that helps.

\Oh and Yes you can stretch the pouch,

The water timing thing has always been something of an issue for me. It is hardest when you are early on like yourself and it does get better when you can take in more volume. It seems like you (we) spend all your day calculating when to eat and drink. It can get annoying.
I get the mos****er in if I start to drink before "breakfast". I have a 500 ml container and I have two cups before breakfast and then two after each meal (waiting the approprate time)...that seems to help me.
It does get better.

I guess it will the more I'm able to drink at a time. Water, if I gulped too much, instead of sipping, used to hurt. Now i'm realizing that I can gulp somewhat now, so yes it will get easier.
