What jdance said makes sense - i would think we could drink water up to 1 minute before meals because it drains out immediately. But the staff at Ottawa Hospital told us the number one reason for weight regain is drinking water with your meals.

I had a rough time with sipping right from the start - hard for me to do.  I'm finally at the point I can drink a couple of small mouthfuls at a time- I try to get in a litre of water minimal a day and most of it is done in the afternoon and my drive home - an hour each way.  I try to drink a glass of water while I'm cooking dinner and then another drink later in the evening.

I have a protein shake or coffee + protein at 8:00 a.m., then a glass of green tea with Splenda at around 11:00 then an iced coffee (1/2hr after my lunch)...with 2 milk and 2 Splenda (no syrup), and then usually two more 600 ml drinks of green tea or flavoured (SF water).

I chose not to drink 1/2 hr before or after my meals and still get the odd look from a server when they ask what I would like to drink and I say nothing, not even water, pushing my food especially my protein through my system is not something I want to ever get used to !!!

You know what? I haven't been including my coffee or tea. I think I have the old WW mentality where you couldn't include a beverage that had caffeine in it as a water.

I am pretty sure in order for it to count as water it has to be decaf. Plus I don't think they recommend anything with caffeine this early out as it is irritating to your new anatomy

Hmm. I wasn't told not to have caffeine, just limit it. I have one (if that) a day. It hasn't hurt. And it's only been recent that I have been able to finish a medium before it got too cold.

I think I read somewhere that the water in protein shakes counts too. I could be wrong.
