Probably normal, but . . .

I am 2 weeks out today - you know, I just don't feel like taking anything in.  Pouchy seems to be a little sensitive, like it's full, kind of achy, but I haven't had anything much, and have no desire to either.  Today I've had a Carnation Anytime with 1/2 scoop protein powder and about 3/4 cup of water, and a calcium-D.  Just don't care to eat anything.  Normal?  It'll pass?

Had RNY surgery July 22/11, St. Joe's Hamilton, with the awesome Dr. Scott Gmora.  Had abdominoplasty August 2/13, Scarborough, with equally awesome Dr. Michael Kreidstein.

Not only is it normal to not want to eat after surgery but that is the whole beauty of surgery. you are really defining your relationship with food you are no longer living to eat but eating to live.

your job every day is now to focus on your body and eating and your nutrition you are no longer a slave to food and food does not control you enjoy it! Reli****!

You now have a super power. It is the power to say no to food ! while you are going to eat to maintain nutrition for your body you no longer need to eat things like cakes and cookies. you are eating for health from now on this super power does not last forever eventually your food issues will come back. Enjoy this special power!!

mind you it is a challenge because you don't want to eat but now you have a new focus and it is your job so you are going to do your best that you can to focus on protein and water

Thanks, that makes me feel better.  My hubby made me some delicious FF broth, so I think I'll heat that up to get some fluids in.  I have to get used to the fact that not eating much is okay.

cream soup would be better than broth, more protein.

just curious, it's been a long time since I was at this particular stage, but wouldn't cream soups be too high in fat???

All I recall was that at 2 weeks post-op I was enjoying clear broth soups particularly wonton soup (minus the wontons) from the local cginese place.

if she's having protein drinks, she's likely at the full fluids stage, one of the foods you're allowed is cream soups. If they're too high in fat, then a low fat cream soup is fine.

Eating at this stage is a freaking chore.
you have to eat when you don't feel like it, your body needs those nutrients whether you feel like it or not.

Please try to take in as much of your allowed foods as you can possibly get. You need to nourish yourself.

It's a weird mind set to get into, we're so used to restricting ourselves, that it feels unnatural to "try to get as much in as you possibly can". I guarantee you that you will not get anywhere near 1000 calories at this stage of the process, because it takes so long to eat anything.

I can't say enough tho, your body needs fuel to work. You will get sick if you don't try to get your nutrients in.

I just bought a mango-peach protein non-milky drink from GNC - it's wonderful, and way more protein than the Carnation Anytime.  I think things will be a bit better for the rest of the day.  I'm not allowed cream soups yet - I think I get to add yogurt and thinned oatmeal & cream of wheat on the weekend.  Creamed soups come a little later for me.  Thanks for the info and support.

the saying goes "this too shall pass" and that's probably true for a large portion of what happens or is going to happen in the next few months.

baby the pouch, as nuch as you can and treat it well..it's with you and will serve you well for the rest of your life.
