Just a few questions

Hi everyone! Sorry I haven't posted in so long.  I just got a job at Walmart. . . LOL!  I was wondering if any of you suffered from extreme heel pain from standing at your pre-op weights, what you did about it, and if it improved after surgery.   Thanks, Stacy

I have been having extreme heel pain in my right heel. I went to my doctor and he diagnosed me with plantar faciitis (sp?). And put me on celebrex. YUCK I hate this celebrex stuff, makes me sick to my stomach. On the plus side  my doc said although once you have it, it usually comes and goes, that my WLS should help me see it less often because I w't have so much weight on it. Someone else just told me that because I got it while in the military, I will be eligible for 10% disability when I get out... hmmmmm

Celebrex. . . I think thats related to Naproxen/Naprosin. . . if so, I'm allergic to it!  How old does someone have to be to get that "plantar facitis" because I think my dad has it, but I dont know if it's a possibility for me since I'm only 20.   Good luck with the 10% disability! Stacy

Stacy, I am only 27 and I have it, so it is definitely a possibility at a young age. As for the disability, I am not planning on getting out of the military for many many years, so it shouldn't be an issue any time soon! Laura

Years before I had WLS, I had plantar fascitis, and had surgery to alleviate the pain.  I also found that wearing Birkenstock sandals, and shoes, as well as an orthotic, alleviated the pain as well.  Now, even though I am post-op 9 months, I only wear Birkenstocks.  Yes, they are not cheap, but they last for years and feel so good.  Since I spend a lot of hours on my feet as a teacher, I feel they are well worth the investment. Hugs, Trish

Thanks for the advice.  I'll get some Birkenstocks once I get my first paycheck. . . I thought they only made sandals.  What do you teach?  I'm a senior majoring in elementary and special education.

I am certified in elementary, middle school math, middle school social studies and middle school english.  I teach in Philadelphia.  This year I am teaching 7th grade social studies and english.  I am getting transferred for next year, so I have no idea what I will be teaching then.  I hope to know on Thursday where I will teach, and have an idea what I will teach. Do you live near Lancaster?  There is a QVC outlet in Rockvale Outlets where they have Birkenstocks for a decent price. Good luck in finishing your degree.  What college do you attend? Hugs, Trish

Nope, I'm not near Lancaster.  Maybe I will have to make a trip up there just so I can try the shoes on AND get a good price!    Thanks for the advice.

Thanks for the luck LOL!  I go to Carlow University in Oakland (just outside of Downtown Pittsburgh.)  95% of the students are female and it is an Irish/Cathothic private university.  Ever heard of it? Stacy

Heard of it.  I got three grad credits from Carlow through a correspondance course.  My son lives in Swissvale, and is applying to Pitt to attend part-time.  He attended Penn State McKeesport for a few semesters and the Art Institute in Pittsburgh a year or so ago.  I have visited him, and have also been to Pittsburgh on my own.  I think it one of the nicest cities around.  Last summer, I took my son on an evening cruise up and down the rivers.  He took me to some Arboretum, and we had Chinese right near itt's campus.  We also rode on one of the inclined planes.  I studied at the Heinz Historical Center one summer with a bunch of Social Studies teachers from across the state.  We stayed right in downtown, at the Courtyard by Marriott. Sorry to babble.  I plan to sto in Pittsburgh to visit my son on my way to Michigan in a few weeks.  His sister is about to have a baby, and she lives in Michigan.   Take care.  You can get Birkenstocks online.  I think the company I have ordered them from is Birkenstock Express. Hugs, Trish

Hi Stacy

I had plantar fascitis that lasted for a year. I had several cortosone shots which really helped and spent a lot of money for very supportive shoes like Dansko clogs, mephistos, Naots. You can order on Zappos. com. They are a little less and there are comments to give you an idea of what might work for you. As a teacher who stands all day I felt that the cost was well worth it. The pain has finally subsided and hopefully being less weight and retiring after 33 years will keep it from returning.
