All proteined out!!

Just had gastric bypass surgery at Barix with Dr. Boe last Thursday (April 30th). Dr. Boe requires a 10-day pre-surgery liquid diet, so I've not had "real" food for over two weeks.

It was very hard on the pre-surgery liquid diet to get my protein in. I've tried tons of protein shakes (Chike, Syntrax, Designer Whey), but just can't get used to the taste (especially the aftertaste). Before surgery, I could chug one of them and then chase it down with some water. Now that I'm post-op, I can't do that anymore and I'm really having a hard time getting my protein in. I've even tried the All Whey "tasteless" protein mix, but that leaves an aftertaste in my mouth.

I'm sure this is just something I will have to get used to, but I'm really getting frustrated.

If anyone has any "tasty" suggestions for protein intake, I'd greatly appreciate them. Thank you!

Michelle

Humm well unfortunately it is a necessary evil! SOme like the protein "bulletts" and treat them like medicine and "shoot" them like a shot! The Max Protein from GNV (chocolate) is great, the nectars from barix got me through early out - I liked the cappuccino and the fuzzy navel. It is just a matter of trying them!

Also if I am remembering correctly you are on "full liquids" now whi*****ludes jello, pudding and yogurt as well as strained soups. buy a can of low fat soup and blend it then thin it out with milk or broth.

You can take greek yogurt (brand names are fage, chobani, okikos and I think that there is 1 more) and mix in some pudding mix, preserves (seedless and not chunky), flavored sugar free syrups, jello crystals etc. Plain it tastes like sour cream so you can also add it to creamy soups etc. You can also blend it with fruit and milk to make a smoothie - anyway there is 17-20 grams of protein in 7 ounces!

THere is also ricotta cheese that you can do all of those same things with. Remember that milk has a fair amount of protein in it too -add that where you can. Same with broths.

Hope that this helps!

Of course its best to get your protein through foods/shakes, but until you can get it in, my nutritionist/hospital suggested Proteinex 18.  Its a pre-digested protein (i think they even use it in IV bags) and has  a large amount of protein in a TBSP.
I saw they have it on amazon.com.

I may buy it in case I'm feeling the same way after surgery.  Hope the stuff starts going down better.

I bought the Atkins Advantage pre-made drinks and they were not bad.

Also the syntrax nectar fuzzy navel is good (not alot of aftertaste) particularly when you mix it with crystal light orange.

Some of those protein shots are nasty, but  my brother drank some mixed with crystal light and wasn't nearly as bad.

I also blended up Carnation Instant Breakfast with lactose free milk and an extra scoop of plan "any whey" protein powder" and it was good :)

Is there anything in particular you're craving?  After my surgery I hated the taste of sweet, so I ate a lot of broth, some with Any Whey mixed in (yeah, I had to choke it down sometimes) or with Greek yogurt mixed in.

I also second Kathleen's suggestion of the Nectar Fuzzy Navel.  I used to mix it with either Crystal Light orange or the 4C Lemonade (no aspartame in that one) to make about 24 oz and sip it for a while.

Good luck with it.  I know the liquid phase ain't the greatest, but this too shall pass!

Hi Michelle - I had Dr Boe too (and loved him!) and yes, the 10 day liquid diet was tough, but I saw you lost weight on it and so did I (17 lbs). No one expects you to get all your proteins in right now - you probably have no appetite anyway, and most things taste nasty - including water. Make sure you sip a lot of water - I couldn't tolerate ice cold water after surgery so I drank it at room temp, but now I can drin**** water again.

I sipped on shakes and mixed protein with my broth - maybe not the best tasting combinations in the world but they will help you heal and will help you get your energy back. They won't always taste that bad and be that difficult to get down - remember, your body just underwent a major, major surgery so everything is going to be different for a while.

Looks like you're well on your way to becoming healthier already - keep up the great work! Your taste will return eventually and in the meantime you'll just have to experiment with some of the suggestions the others gave you until you find something you like, but honestly, don't expect to get all your proteins in the first few weeks - nobody does and we're all just fine now.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I'm glad to know that it's not abnormal to not get my proteins in. I was so afraid I was going to mess my body up. I will try my hardest to get as much protein in as I can!

Thanks again,

Michelle

No, you're not abnormal by any means!! If you are then we all are/were, too - and trust me, Dr Boe and the nuts don't expect you to get it all in right away either - its a slow process at first - but you will get to your daily goals and even then some days you'll hit it, some days not. It was a few months before I wa****ting my goals on a consistent basis.

You'll be fine - just take it easy - get your water in and your walks - and sip on those protein drinks and jello - all the fun stuff you had pre-surgery!

Michelle -

I am a huge fan of Isopure (clear in the 20 oz bottles).  You can get them at GNC.  I will warn you - they are pricey - but you can get a discount if you get a case and even a bigger discount if you buy in the first 7 days of the month.  You can also mix and match flavors in the case.

These are clear liquids and pack 40 gms of protein (175 calories) in 20 oz).  This is not something you want to chug - but drink 10 oz in the morning and 10oz at night and you get 40gms of your requirement in.

Flavors are Grape, Orange, Green Tea, Black Tea, Peach, Blue Razzberry - there are others - but go on over to GNC.  Buy one bottle to see if you like it then decide.  My friend Donna was not a fan of the taste (I like the taste) - so she would mix the bottle with some crystal lite and sip it throughout the day.

I also had Dr. Boe - he is awesome!  Congrats and welcome to the bench.

If you are a BJ's Member, they have a fruit juice that has no sugar all natural the brand is Adam & Eve, it pear mango flavored, I used to mix that with my Syntrax Peach Nectar Protein Powder.  It was very silky just like real apricot pear nectar.

Some days your the dog and some days your the hydrant.

the pear mango/peach combo sounds good.  Just about to order me some Nectar fuzzy naval to add to my orange crystal light- will have to give that a try too :)
