hello, this is my first time asking a question. what do diabetics use( after surgery )to raise their glucose levels if they drop too low? my surgery is Monday and i need to go shopping before then.

My nephew is Type 1 Diabetes and if his levels drop too low he sweats, gets the shakes and very weak - he will actually stick a spoonful of sugar in his mouth, eat a candy bar or grab anything sweet he can find - the same cannot be done with us as most of us react badly to sugar.

Protein - a shake or something like that works for me.

POst op you can use fruit juice. OJ, apple juice or any other 100% juice. You'll find that if you just eat on schedule you'll be OK 99% of the time and hopefully your sugar never drops!

Good luck monday!

All juices must be halfed with water, btw; never straight 100% juice, you can dump from that, too concentrated.   2oz. will raise your blood sugar about 20 pts. in 15 mins. Milk is excellent to raise your blood sugar, even better than OJ; but just out of surgery it might be too gassy as we tend to get lactose intolerant post-op.    If you need a quick fix rub a packet of splenda into the inside of your cheek so it mixes with your saliva; that is easy to carry with you in your purse.   Frankly, I don't remember having too many lows immediately after surgery as I was literally eating constantly to make my numbers, whether it be sucking on a NSA popsicle or half of a dannon lite & fit; I did tend to get up in the middle of the night, sometimes even 2X feeling low and I'd always have a little yogurt and wait a couple minutes and would be fine.   You need to stop thinking in terms of 70-80 being a low; that is a norm.   My new norm after surgery became 77-79.   If I went to a 68, I felt shaky.   If I went to 115 I fell asleep.

I had serious issues with my blood sugar levels dropping quickly and dangerously low.  I got dextrose in my IV in the hospital 6 times when I bottomed out.  I had a 6 day stay thanks to my diabetic problems.  (No surgery issues at all)  After I came home I was told to sip on protein shakes as soon as I started to drop below a set level.  After 3 days at home my body got it's act together.  BTW...I took ~15 pills and 3 shots per day....and now...just my 2 flintstones w/iron and 2 calcet creamy bites.
Good luck,
Sara
