Hello,

I don't have my surgery scheduled yet, but my doctor wants me to drop some weight before my next

Consult to make sure I'm comitted to this journey. Any helpful tips would be appreciated. I'm not good with sugar free stuff. Please help... How did yall drop weight before?

Weight loss was not required by my insurance company, however I knew that dropping as much weight as possible pre-op would make things easier on my surgeon. I went on a low carb, high protein for one month prior to surgery, and lost 27 pounds.

Highest Weight: 412 | Day of Surgery: 385 | Current: 341
Surgery Date: 1/6/2015

I agree with Kayleestar, I did the same and lost 24lbs.

I wasn't required to drop any weight; however, I lost 50 pounds in two months prior to surgery simply by following the post-op eating plan my surgeon recommends.

(I was 439 pounds and I'm male so my results are not typical.)

Like chulbert, started the post-op eating plan prior and went swimming often.  I was SSMO, so the 80 pounds I lost is not typical, either.

I'd probably go with something like Medifast... it's supervised, pretty tried & true, not sustainable long term but not many diets are but for short term use (a few months) will help you drop some weight if followed... plus they document your efforts.

Not sure what you are doing now. I lost 50 pre op giving up all soda, sugar, unhealthy carbs, watching portion sizes and concentrating on lower fat proteins. Beef became a treat, skinless chicken breasts a staple. No snacking at all. Basically eating the right way. Overcoming lifelong habits made post surgery losing easier as well.

Hey there,

I'm only a few weeks into the preparation, but my nutritionist recommended I follow the post-surgical eating plan as much as possible:  protein first, veggies second, and if any starch/carb, a very small serving.  I find I get filled up on the protein and veggies.  I read the "what's on your menu" thread for ideas on choices and snacks. I have also started exercising 30 minutes a time, 4 times a week - a stationary bike is all I can manage but it's all about getting moving and getting my heart rate up right now.  Anyway, I'm down 10 pounds in 3 weeks - I'm over 50 and female and post-menopausal, so this is borderline miraculous.  I don't expect that rate to continue of course, but I plan to work hard to get as much off before surgery as possible. Good luck to you!

Good luck with your journey. The previous posters tips look good. Not to start grumping or anything, I do have a question. If you are not good with sugar free stuff now, what will you do AFTER surgery when you will be eating mostly sugar free stuff. It may be for like with sugar free stuff if you are a dumper (I is possible) like several are with this RNY gastric bypass, not everybody dumps. But you never know if you will be a dumper until afterwards. And that would be a difficult way to live if you cannot eat sugar free stuff, and end up on the potty with excruciating intestinal cramps and diarrhea, rapid heart palpitations, foamy throw ups. Again I am not trying to be contrary, just asking.

Thank you for the tips. I just don't like the taste sugar free leaves, the after taste,  but I'm going to try different kinds and see what I do like.
