I have a rare complication called Post-Bariatric Hypoglycemia (PBH) that manifested 8 years post-op. I'm under the care of gastric bypass surgeons, endocrinologists, cardiologists, gastroenterologists, and internal medicine. After 20 hospitalizations in 2018, with 8 of them ending with me being admitted, I've had countless tests performed. Dietary modifications and medication management failed, so my doctors are all in agreement that my surgery needs to be reversed. Though there are significant risks to consider -including the possibility that reversal will not correct my hypoglycemia- my current condition can be life-threatening, as it's getting increasingly worse and more difficult to manage.
I was a poster child for RNY surgery, with many obesity-related conditions, all of which resolved after surgery (including my T2 Diabetes). At 5'10", I was 280 at my peak weight. After 7-8 months, I had gone down to 165lbs. I kept my weight off. However, in March 2018, I had emergency surgery to remove food that was lodged in my gastric pouch. Shortly afterwards, I developed PBH.
MANY doctors perform RNY but very FEW ever reverse them, so I am aware of the risks even when performed by a surgeon experienced with reversal. I am looking to put together a list of doctors who have had success in reversing RNY gastric bypass so that I may research my best options. Please post a response if you know of a surgeon or surgeons who successfully reverse RNY. I live between NYC and Philadelphia, but am willing to travel anywhere in the US to have the best surgeon perform my reversal. PLEASE DON'T RESPOND WITH A HORROR STORY ABOUT REVERSAL. I am aware of the risks, but my life is at risk right now and reversal one of my only options.
Hi everyone. It's been awhile since I've been here. I had great success getting banded in 2010, actually lost 240lbs. However, it flipped and was removed in 2014. Since then I've gained back most of the weight I had lost. I'm planning on getting a VSG in January. I've booked the surgery, bought my plane tickets and committed to this course.
Oh wow lady Godiva!
I go next week to see my Surgeon to see about getting a revision. I was hoping to get the sleeve after they take this band out. I also thought that it would be one surgery. I have oodles of issues with re flux and night coughs and it sounds like I might have to have the bypass done also.
I deleted my original post because I realized I was saying the same thing ladygodiva said. I agree with her!
Original surgery: VSG Feb. 2009
REVISED TO RNY FEBRUARY 2016
Height: 5'7"
Start weight: 252. Current weight: 120
Hey - I am booked in to have this surgery as a VSG revision so no personal experience just yet. As the previous poster mentioned there is a facebook group for the SADI-S/Loop which is really quite active. Joining this group helped me to make the decision to go with this rather than the full DS as it does look like a promising surgery.
Hopefully someone will come along with some experience of the surgery & be able to answer your questions.
Good luck with your surgery xx
If you are going in for a revision due to issues with your band then the BMI requirement usually isn't necessary. What does your insurance policy say about revisions?
I know mine said if there is something mechanically wrong or there was a medical reason for the revision that would be good enough. No mention of having to have a BMI over 40.
Let me preface by saying, I know how to gain weight, ha ha. Don't we all! So please no comments about it being a ridiculous question since I'm on this site (I saw another poster get ridiculed for a similar question). I have an appointment in a couple weeks to discuss revision. My BMI is below 40, but not by much. I am running a race the weekend after the appointment, so I don't want to stuff my face between now and then to weigh more.
Drink lots of water before the appointment? Super salty food a couple days leading up to the appointment? Quarters in my pockets? Any other tricks of the trade? I have no co-morbidities so I'd really like to be at 40 for my initial appointment. :)
fingers crossed for you and your journey as well . tomorrow makes a week since surgery and the day before surgery i weighed 249 and this morning i weighed myself and im 241 and extremely happy with the revision thus far my first f/u suregery will be this Saturday.
first off I'm a nurse and deal with insurance companies. Sometimes just one explanation from patient or doctor, like reflux or pain, will get revision passed. I meet with surgeon Friday and want to go RNY to DS, my plan covers surgery but unsure about revision. Anyone had this issue and what did you say to get Insurance to pass it?
