Topic: RE: Banded, having issues and want a revision surgery approved by insurance, lost 150+

Wow, so your doctor actually was proactive in informing you there are issues!? That's awesome! It's exciting news for those fighting doctors to even consider there are issues caused by the band. Maybe they are all starting to catch on that the band was not a very smart invention after all. :)

Also, UHC is super solid for covering the revision 100% and it honestly gives me some hope with Cigna. Have you lost significant weight or was the band unsuccessful for you? I don't know if the amount of weight lost is or is not a factor, but I am hoping my long term health and success is the priority here. I worked damn hard to get here and don't want to balloon as soon as this thing comes out. :/ SO stressed!

Topic: RE: Removing the band- but which is better, Sleeve or Bypass?

Thank you for responding. I think you're right, I think I should just go straight to the bypass and BEHAVE this time. And true about unforeseen damage, I hope there's nothing but they are going to review it on my next visit.

We hear of so many ex-banders that revise to VSG that have to revise again to RNY. I think you're better off getting a bypass after the issues you've had with the band, which could very well have caused unforeseen damage.

Wow! I hope u did well in your surgery. I'm asking for a revision.... I had mine in 2002, RNY, I wonder if I'm in the same boat. Large stoma etc. I have an appointment with the surgeon on 8/29.ill be interested in talking to you, if u are up to it. I also have a hernia that needs fixing too. They talked about band over RNY, but they haven't seen me yet. I'm curious. Please contact me if u are up to it. Thanks, Kimberly Thompson

Topic: Removing the band- but which is better, Sleeve or Bypass?

I have to make a decision by the time I see my dr on the 30th to discuss my options for removing the band. But I am not sure which one to choose next? I have never had any acid re-flux with the band , just the occasional vomiting because I ate too much or too fast. So I think the bypass will keep me in check and I am afraid the sleeve will turn into a disappointment later. Any thoughts from anyone. I love hearing from others and as well as being support for others too.

I have United Healthcare and the funny thing I just learned is If I choose to take out the band, I am covered 80% and I pay the rest...If I choose a revision... its 100% I have had the band since 2011 and I am almost back at my starting weight. The Dr office called me to inform me that the bands are causing damage to the esophagus and they asked me to come in to check it. I had the GI done and will follow up on Aug 30th to discuss my options. But really my insurance made the decision for me and I am okay with that process.

Have you tried to go back to basics? Eat dense protein first followed by non-starchy vegetables, weigh your food, track what you eat with an app like MyFitnessPal, don't drink during a meal or 30-60 minutes afterwards, drink more than 64 oz of water a day, don't drink excess calories, no added sugar or processed food.... A revision may not help if the root cause of your regain is due to overeating.

As stated in this article on the main page, "bariatric surgery does not necessarily curb psychological cravings for foods, nor does it necessarily change emotional eating patterns."

I also forgot to mention that I developed spinal stenosis in February 2018. Requiring two shots of steroids. I'm still sore!

Topic: Considering revision

I underwent my inital RNY at the age 0f 20. Throughout my twenties I maintained quite well. at 29 I got married... since that time I have been gaining back my weight. Last year I took a new job and in the last year have gained about 50 pounds. Before my RNY I weighed in at 335lbs. At my lowest I was 165lbs (looked sickly) but promised myself to never go over 200lbs. Felt and looked great at 180lbs. I am now back to 260lbs. I no longer experience dumping and can eat basically anything. I am considering a revision but am nervous my PCP wont support me(referral), two have a lot of shame. My BMI also does not meet criteria as it is 38 (not the magic 40)... wondering what others have gone through and what their experiences have been?
