Is there anyone out there that has had this surgery that is/was 50 when they had it done?? I see so many younger ones out there and I know that you tend to heal better the younger you are. Just want to know how it all went for you...I am approved for Sept. but of course the mind is wondering with all the questions. But I have faith in the Lord and the surgeon so I know I will be ok.

Hi, Debbie!! I had my surgery almost 2 years ago and it was a month after I turned 50. I had NO problems at all and healed very quickly. (I had laprascopic, which helped a lot!!) I've lost 130 pounds and have been maintaining for 6 months. Who is your surgeon? I had Dr. Glen Strickland in Lexington and he was great!!!! Best of luck to you and soon you'll be a loser like the rest of us!! Hugs, Connie

HI DEBBIE CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR UP & COMING SURGERY ! I'm 51 and will be going in for RNY Wednesday, July 19th at MUSC. I think it would depend upon the health of the individual as to how well they recover from major surgery. Individuals who have diabetis for instance probably have a lengther time of healing than most of us. I've had pneumonia during the months of June & the first week in July so my system may be run down. But I have every reason to believe that everything will go smoothly. I received a letter of clearance from my pcp to continue as scheduled with my surgery so I believe all will be fine. I'm sure as far as healing is concerned at our age we may heal alittle slower and we may lose alittle slower but we're like the tortoise ...we do eventually get there. We're just alittle more fragile when we get older and have to take extra special care of ourselves. And there's nothing wrong with that huh? I wish you the very best Susan

Hey Debbie, I'm not 50 yet...only 48 (49 in a couple of months)...but had my surgery almost 6 months ago and haven't had any problems. I healed up just fine. Exercise has been a little difficult for me to get in, but since I was promoted to assistant manager (a much more physical job!!), the weight has been melting off of me. You will do fine!!! Hugs, Dianne

Hi Debbie Dr. Morgan did my surgery 20 months ago, and I l just LOVE her. You are in excellent hands. I'll be 51 tomorrow and I had my surgery 20 months ago. I'm diabetic, so it took me a little longer to bounce back, but I had no problems healing. Just follow the rules and you'll do great. This surgery is the best decision you could ever make for yourself. I only wish I had done it 30 years ago. It is worth the short period of discomfort and adjustment that comes with it. Actually, the waiting is the hardest part. I wondered if I would ever feel "normal" again. Well, I feel completely "normal" and usually forget that I've even had this surgery. My lifestyle is healthy and routine to me. I just went on a vacation and watched people eating all kinds of unlimited luscious desserts and a Ghiradelli candy factory store rampage right in front of me for a solid week. They all kept saying, "Oh, I'll just have one more and I'll start my diet next week." That was fine for them and I remembered when I did the same thing, but I didn't want any of it. My greatest pleasure is being "normal" and not the largest person in the room anymore. This web site and the fantastic people on it will help you more than anything. I had only just found it when I had my surgery and didn't know anyone personally to ask any questions of. What a difference that would have made. I went through it alone and no one should have to do that if they don't have to. That's why I invite anyone who can to attend one of our Low Country Bypass Buddies Support Group meetings or any group in your area. They are wonderful people at all stages of the process. Sometimes a hug from someone who "has been there" makes all the difference. We're there for each other through it all and have so much information to share. We truly love each other like family. I have found that I have bonded so closely with other people who have this surgery - I guess because it changes our lives so much. Please try to come to one of our meetings. They're held every Thursday night at JC's Bar & Grill on Ashley Phosphate. We have them there because Cheryl , the owner, is "one of us" and graciously provides us space and a menu tailored to our desires. Some restaurants don't want us, because we're not big spenders and we take up a lot of room and make a lot of noise. We don't all make it every week because of busy lives, but we're a large group when we do. There's lots of hugging - we're big on that! And lots of woohooing, because we celebrate each pound we lose - we're big on that too. LOL. Hope we'll see you soon. Best of luck with your surgery. My prayers are with you Love. B
