I always said, had I not had this liver problem (NASH), I proabably wouldn't have had RNY.
As the days went by, I got more and more happy with the weight loss, however, I didn't want people to think I had done this for vanity's sake.
Well, I got the results of the liver panel in my bloodwork and 2 of the 3 numbers (i don't know exactly what they are) are within NORMAL LIMITS!!! The last one is very very close!!
So in 6 months, I went from FOUR TIMES the normal numbers to right in the middle on two and a little over the upper limit on the 3rd. In 6 months! Can you believe it!?!? I have not had a normal liver panel since I was 19 years old...even when I lost a lot of weight through diet and exercise!!!!!
RNY has really given me the chance at a much longer life. So what if I can fit into a size 10? Look at my labs!! I'd wear those in public if I could.

Kathy,
that is awesome!! I am VERY interested in to know what was going on with your liver. SINCE before surgery, my liver enzymes were very high, and then were normal after surgery...but then the other day, a week or so ago when I had that "episode" of constipation or blockage, they were over 400!!!!!
I went back in and they were all back to normal except my alkaline phosphatase, ALP, so just was curious to know what was causing it??
What caused yours to be elevated? Just curious about what we can do to lower them and keep them down....steroids caused mine to start with, so no more steroids for me, but why 13 months out do I still have this now??
CONGRATS! Hope they stay down!!!!

I have (had?) NASH - Non Alcoholic Steatohepititus - Fatty liver disease that has progressed enough to actually damage the liver. My liver was very very enlarged, they almost cancelled my surgery, but that is what got me approved for surgery in the first place.
It causes fibrous scarring on the liver - which eventually causes Cirhossis of the liver. I had not progressed to Cirhossis yet, but I already had some scarring. My Uncle died of this at 45, my aunt died of it at 55. Neither drank alcohol, but both were very overwieght. My Aunt died two weeks before I got my surgery date. They were my Mom's brother and sister.
Anyway, chances were that if I hadn't done something I would not have lived to see my grandchildren or I would have been in line for a transplant before my daughter even graduated high school. My aunt didn't live to see her only son graduate from high school. I still can't think about it without tearing up.
I was kind of worried that this surgery wouldn't work because I've heard of post ops having elevated liver enzymes AFTER surgery. However, my surgeon assured me that this would fix it and prevent any further damage to my liver and HE WAS RIGHT! I still get so happy about it.
