Post-Op swelling!

Ok, how long does it take for the belly swelling to go away? It has gone down alot since Friday, but still has a long way to go before it is back to what it was before surgery. I'm real happy with my weight loss so far, even though I know it will not continue to drop off like it has been the past 4 days. To give you an idea of what my weight has been doing here are the stats on it. Highest weight: 247.8 Last weigh in at Dr. Bours: 240.4 Day of surgery: 233.0 Friday after surgery: 244.8 Sat. 240.0 Sunday: 236.0 Monday: 230.0 Tuesday: 226.5 So there you have it. Up and down, lol. I know the gain was all fluid and gas, after surgery, and now its the real thing's coming off. Also, this is on my scale with no clothes on, which is usually about 3 pounds lower than the Dr. scale with shoes and clothes. But its great getting back into the 220's again, its been a while, and though its not much, its a good start for me. This is the fastest I have ever had weight drop off. I'm getting in my Prostat, still with no problems, actually I had 90 grams of protein yesterday and drank a good bit all day long. I peed constantly too! My son-in-law was kind enough to bring me a big pot of home made chicken broth that he made, and god it was like heaven, such a difference from the store bought. He is such an angel and a great son-in-law. Ok, sorry I tend to get long winded on these post, but I'm so bored and need to talk. Everyone take care! Mary

Mary, I think you are doing great! You've lost 6.5 lbs since the day of your surgery! Even more than that if you count the gas and liquids from surgery. I hope the bloating goes away soon - I know that can't be comfortable. Good thing you have such a great son-in-law. What is your favorite protein? I have a lot to choose from already but I haven't tried any yet. I'm waiting on my surgery since I have heard that tastes change once you are post-op. Keep up the good work! Susan

Thank you Susan. I know it takes time for the swelling to go away, it's not that uncomfortable just makes me look pregnant, lol. It's going down slowly so I hope by the end of the week it will be gone. As far as the protein goes, I'm not a very good spokesperson for any of them. I bought 3 containers of unjury, 2 unflavored and one strawberry sorbet. All I have to say for both of those is YUK! I have two bottles of Prostat 64 that I got at a support meeting and everyone there thought I was nuts for even considering taking them home. I had tried it at my Dr's office and couldn't describe the taste other than it was foul tasting. I'm glad I took the two bottles home with me because they have been my saving grace on getting my protein in. I found that one of my shot glasses, lol, is the perfect size for a serving of it, so I just fill it up and suck it down. I figure a couple of seconds of nasty is better than my entire day of liquids, that I am on right now, being nasty all day long with every sip. I guess the mind can take over when neccessary and this was necessary for me to get my protein in. 80 grams is a lot harder to get in than you think. I drink 5 shots of prostat spaced out over the day and have some other fruit flavored protein samples that have 21 grams of protein in them that I use also. If I don't drink the other protein then I take one more shot glass of prostat. I haven't found my taste to change yet. The crystal lite, which I thought would be too sweet, is just the same to me as before surgery. So maybe I won't have a taste change problem.Anyway, I was like you and waited till after surgery before really trying the protein, I guess in a way thats good, and in a way it isn't , now i have alot of unjury to get rid of. Good luck on your surgery and let me know how it all goes with you. Hugs! Mary

Mary, Thanks for the information. Hey, if I find I like Unjury I'll buy it from you. I don't have any Prostat 64 but I think I'll buy some. I'm like you - I think I can tolerate a shot glass of something bad than worrying about getting all my proteins in during the day with stuff that I don't really like. I'm interested in the support meetings also. Aren't they on Thursdays? Are they once a week or once a month or what? Where and what time? Hopefully everything will go well with my surgery and I'll be on the losing side this time next week! Hope your swelling goes down soon and the lbs melt off! Take care, Susan

I'm not sure about the Low Country support meetings, I live in the upstate area. Your more than welcome to drive 3 1/2 hours each week to meet with us, but I think with the price of gas and the time involved you might be better meeting with the ones in your area, lol. We meet on Mondays after our meetings that our doctor has for us. Just the same, if your bored and want to visit Greenville come on up, we will be more than happy to have you join our fun! Take care! The swelling takes a little while. I don't know if mine has completely gone down since surgery and that has been 5 weeks ago! It goes down a good bit between week 2-3. Glad to hear that you are doing well with your protein. That will make such a difference in your recovery!! I'm jealous....I couldn't get any in!! Rachel

you are doing soooo great!!! You have a sweetie for a son-in-law!! You are a blessed woman!! Try adding some protein powder, plain kind, to the soups/broths and whatever else you are eating, it will help you lose faster. The more I up my protein, the more I lose Crazy isn't it?? I like "Any Whey" and I know The Vitamin Shoppe carries it now, but you can google it and find it anywhere. Take care and keep up the great work! PS the more mobile you are, and the more fluids that go in, the more you will lose, and pee out! Peeing is a good thing, so drink up!! Lemon juice will flush your body too, and crystal lite always makes me pee, the pink lemonade kind ;) Deb

Sounds like you are doing great, Mary! I just can't wait for the O2 thing to be resolved, so you can REALLY get going. Your son-in-law is a sweetheart ... there is NO comparison between canned broth and homemade. Don't even think again about the swelling ... it'll be gone soon. You are doing it!!! Dawn
