I was wondering what the healthy amount of calories to be consumed after surgery would be. I keep a very diligent food journal and I am consuming from 600-800 calories a day. I exercise for 45 min 5 days a week and I am only losing 3-4lbs a week. I had RNY surgery on 1/10/2007. Is this rate of weightloss normal only 5 wks out of surgery? I thought it would be faster than that. I have lost a total of 34lbs since my surgery. Any tips for faster loss would be helpful.

Hi, I think you have done good. My first month I lost 30lbs. Dont beat yourself up about it. You will do fine. Down the line there will be times when you go for a month or longer and not lose anything. Ive even went months without losing any then all of a sudden I start losing again. Right now I have lost between 91-94 lbs. And on the 20th of this month I will be 1 year out. Day of surgery I weighed 249.9. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the kind words. I started out at 282lbs on surgery day and I am now down to 248. I guess in reality that loss is not that bad. I know I won't wake up thin tomorrow, but it sure would be nice. I am just trying to stay positive and not get discouraged.

We were told 5 meals a day, 200 calories, less then 7 grams of suger. I would bring the food journal to your nutritionist and let them evaluate your diet. I think you are doing just fine, we all want to wake up skinny, I know that, but it does take a little time. I have lost 103 in almost 8 months. I think that I lost slow, but OMG look at me 8 months ago and where I am now and it all adds up! It looks like you are doing everything right! Chin up!!!! Patti

ONLY 3-5 lbs per week, give me a break, that is fantastic!! Wait until it slows down to 2lbs per month!! It slows down the more you lose. Also, don't worry about calories, I have never counted them, count sugar and protein. I find the more protein I eat, the more I lost. Just up your protein, and watch the sugar and carbs, and you will see it melt away! Deb
