Post-op....? about BC pills

Hey there...I have a question for all you post op peeps... What kind of birth control do you use now? I have been told that after WLS you are more fertile...well that is just what I don't need!!! My OB and I had a discussion about the effectivness of BC pills after WLS...it seems that some people are under the belief that BS pills aren't as effective because with a pouch you don't absorb meds the same way as you did with a full stomach. He had a few recommendations: DH go for the big "V" , he could come in during my WLS and tie my tubes, change BC to IUD, shots or stick with my current pills. I have heard that the shots can cause weight gain so that is out for me, . I really don't have problems with my current pills; that is a vaild option for me. I am just concerned with effectivness (he didn't seem too worried about it though). The IUD is an option but you have to pay for it up front...cost is about the same as pills but you pay for pills monthly. My biggest concern with the "V" or tubes tied is not having that hormone in me any more. When I was younger my periods were BAD!!! He said they could go back to that and I would have to be on a mild BC pill anyway. I know that is a lot of info to decifer but I am just wanting opinions of those that are "in the battle" with me. Thanks!!! Kelly

I DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT BC BECAUSE NICK HAS THE "BIG V". BUT, HOW ABOUT THOSE PATCHES I SEE ADVERTISED? ... IT'S LIKE A PATCH A WEEK OR ONE A MONTH, SOMETHING LIKE THAT. YOU STICK THEM ON YOUR SKIN & YOUR BODY ABSORBS THE MEDS 24 HOURS A DAY. NO FUSS, NO MUSS, NO SURGERY, NO EXPENSIVE IUD. YES, WE'VE BEEN TOLD THAT OUR SYSTEMS WON'T ABSORB LIKE THEY USED TO SO, FOR INSTANCE I TAKE A FLINTSTONE IN THE MORNING & ONE AT NIGHT INSTEAD OF THE NORMAL 1-A-DAY. I'VE BEEN TOLD I HAVE TO CHANGE MY TIME-RELEASED HEART MEDS BECAUSE MY POUCH WON'T ABSORB IT CORRECTLY ... IT GOES THROUGH MY SYSTEM TOO FAST. I ALSO HAVE TO CHANGE MY BP MEDS BECAUSE THEY HAVE A DIARETIC IN THEM & THAT COULD LEAD TO DEHYDRATION. HOPE THIS HELPS. GOD BLESS YOU DAWN & NICK

We talked about the patch too. Doc doesn't recommend them for someone who is so overweight and going through drastic weight loss. He said I will have to lose some weight before I could use them. --Kelly

Kelly, it seems like there are a lot of issues which you are thinking about. I am going to so the PATCH. As I understand your concern in this not being a good option for you right now. Keep us posted on what you decide. Remember there is a forum on here for post op preggp and some of them talk about this often.
