Topic: RE: HELP - Does DR. *****ett do PROGRAM FEES?
Your best bet would be to call his office and ask. If they do charge the extra fee, my guess is, it'll be $2000. Dr. Bour in Greenville does the same thing. The extra fee covers stuff like lifetime access to stuff like a Nutritionist and a psychiatrist or something. Personally, I think it's a load of BS, but I'm sure there are patients that will disagree with me. And again, I gotta point something out - I don't understand how they think that if you're on Medicaid, that you'll be able to afford such a high fee.

Now if they do charge the fee and you're serious about getting this procedure, then you'll just have to do like I did and wind up commuting to a different doctor. It takes me about an hour and a half to get to Spartanburg, but it's all been well worth the time spent riding back and forth. Like I said before, Dr. Ross and his staff go way beyond the call of duty when it comes to treating you and taking care of your concerns. I've had three other surgeries in the last 4 years, all of them dealing with my back and I have to say, out of all the surgeons I've seen, Dr. Ross is by and far the absolute best.

The only other doc that I know of that accepts Medicaid and doesn't charge that extra fee is in Anderson, but I haven't heard too many good things from people who have had this surgery done there. But like I said, at this point, your best bet is to call around. There's a list of docs that accept Medicaid in the thread at the very top of this forum. Good luck.

Chris

I called Dr. *****ett and Dr. Tribble's office today. They do charge a program fee of $500, the lady said it is $250 at your first appointment and the other $250 2 weeks before your surgery... I hope this helps some of you. I think I can manage that ... $2000 on the other hand is way to much!

Some of the bariatric surgeons require you pay a program fee to start the surgery process. One I went to wanted a 2000 dollar fee. I just can't afford it and thought if I have insurance that pays most of the surgery why would I want to pay a fee that is no covered by insurance. But that is just me. I checked around. I found out that not all centers charge that program fee. I guess it is your own preference but I just can't see paying it when there are wonderful other groups that allow you to keep that fee in your pocket to use elsewhere and offer the same support and post op following. Like I said it is just a personal choice.

Dr Strickland in Columbia at SC OBesity Center doesn't charge a fee to get started either. I am having my sleeve done on March 6th and everyone has been great!

Topic: PROGRAM FEE HELP
For those of you in need of program help "even Medicaid patients" there is a company called CARE CREDIT I started using them for some dental work then used them when my dog had to have an emergency C-Section and then used them again to help pay program fees. You need to see if your Dr of choice takes care credit or you can visit their web site and see who they have that accepts. There are at least two different programs one is for general and any Dr who takes credit cards can accept it and the other is just for BWLS. Just a thought!

Ps I had terrible credit and was approved.

Topic: RE: Did Anyone Use The Medicaid Plan First Choice by Select Health?
I have select health and it took less than a week for approval. I have several pre-existings tho. Chris I found a shrink with in a few days non of them here take medicaid so I went with one Dr Balders office recommended and it took him about one business day to forward his eval. Sorry you had trouble with that.

Carroll,
Chris pretty much sumed it up. I can tell you if you could travel to Myrtle Beach for the procedure that Dr. Balder is the bomb. His staff knows their stuff and the information packet they give at the first 1 hour seminar has all of the forms and explains every thing in clear terms. From the day I went to the seminar to the day of surgery was almost eight weeks. The office does charge $300 that is non-refundable and medicaid does not cover. A psychiatrist letter is $175, your first three months of vitamins are about $120 and protein is about $30-$70 depending on what and where you get it. As soon as I got my packet I filled out every thing and made back up copies, I paid the $300 dr fee, I contacted my general dr for his letter and scheduled my shrink eval. If you are serious this is the course you will need to take. If you have ever followed a weight loss regimin (and we all have) you need to list them so you will have them (this is important if you do not have any other issues) I followed weigh****chers, did the rice diet, Atkins, slim fast, Zonegran, Zenical, Myrtle beach diet... you get the point. I always checked with my doctor before starting a program or regimin so that he had to document it. I have known for 6 years that I would end up with WLS of some sort. I chose Roux-en-y.
Good luck and don't get discouraged it is a process and takes time.
