I know that it can vary depending on if the dr does lap in comparison to an open procedure....but how long does the surgery take if there are no issues...

I had open w/ Dr Schirmer 2 yrs and i was under about 6 hours but I dont think you have that to worry about. Good luck and best wishes on a speedy recovery....

Each surgeon varies. I had open RNY with Dr Halmi in 2006 and it took 45 mins...... some do it quicker and some take longer.... Jackie

Lori,  As you know, I had mine almost two months ago with Dr. Schirmer and mine took 3 1/2 hours.  It just all depends on the individual as we are all different.  Plan on 2-4 hours to be on the safe side.  Don't worry!  Everything will be okay.  You would not want him to rush and not do something right.

Mine was with Dr. Anez was around 45 minutes which I told my family but with the finishing up, getting me settled in recovery, moving to a room etc. it took longer before they were notified and they got a bit worried so warn him that it may take longer before he hears anything. Funny story, after I woke up & they were getting me settled, I freaked out.  I had never had surgery before & thought the pain was bad (it really wasn't).  Well the nurse was trying to gauge my pain & I kept telling her it was like a 7 or 8 and she couldn't believe I hurt that bad, my blood pressure jumped up because I was panicking and at that time someone called in on the family & friends line to check on me, well I refused the phone because I couldn't handle talking to anyone (still to this day don't know who it was that called).  The nurse was starting to worry til I explained I had never had surgery, she hit me with the morphine & all was good. :)

I'm sorry, but I don't remember how long my lap RNY took.  But since you and I have the same surgeon, I just wanted to wish you the best and to tell you that I have been VERY happy with Dr. Northup!  Get ready for the ride of your life!!

I hope it's a ride that I'll like...lol....I think I'm more worried about giving up the food-- do you ever go though a "mourning period" or does the surgery even let you care about it?
