Need help getting protein in!

Alright, I thought I was all set by buying several different kinds/brands of protein supplements (Champion Nutrition dry shake mixes, Worldwide Nutrition canned ready to drink shakes, Any Whey additive, Isopure ready to drink "juices").  For the past few days, I've been totally turned off by all the protein stuff I have.  It's already been a battle trying to get in a good 4 cups of liquid and at least 40 grams of protein a day.   Now for some reason, my stomach is turning at the thought of these drinks.  I can take about one medicine cup full (2 oz) and I'm nauseous.  I'm okay with other drinks like diluted juice, crystal light, or water.  Help!  I've already spent a ridiculous amount of money on all this stuff and don't know what else to do.  I have my pre-op on Weds, so I'll ask my doctor then, but in the meantime I'm trying to keep myself as hydrated and full of protein as I can.  Any suggestions?   Oh, and that "Any Whey" powder which you can add to drinks, food, etc, is NOT tasteless.  Maybe my tastebuds are being rebellious but I don't want to end up in the hospital on an IV.  Thanks guys! PS - I was 20lbs down at 1 week.  At least something's working :o)

Hiya - I can so relate!! It was hard for me to fnd a palatable protein - and that is the reason they tell you not to buy much before surgery as your taste bids will change - well mine never changed enough to make me like any of the usual protein.!!! I now use the bullets  - Whey protein BY IDS and as long as you take them with food they work effieciently - for me anyway - and my labs are good. They are only 3 ounces of liquid and I just knock them back quickly and I have 25g of protein in one hit. Also Unjury protein is not too tasteable in stews and chilis - and some people love the Unjury Chocolate flavored. They also make a good addative for protein balls. Those are also a good way to get protein in. There are some good recipes for those floating about... If you like coffee - which sadly I don't - there are spme protein additives that people here use - Achiev 1 (I think it is called that) is also a coffee flavored drink that people here swear by..... I am sure there are others on the board that will be able to help you. Hope this helps a little.... Jackie

How are you preparing your drinks?  For me....if it was something that I would have had as a milk shake, well...by golly that's how I will make this one too. For example...chocolate - I will use 1/2 cup of milk, 1 scoop of chocolate protein powder, 1/2 cup of water and crushed ice.  Blend and drink.  Sometimes, I will add some banana or frozen cherries to it.  Adding straigh****er to those type of protein drinks really made them taste like chocolate flavored water (to me). Also....the Vitamin Shoppe carries Micellar Milk - 17 oz = 40 grams of protein.  It's premade and you can open and sip of it.  It's heat tolerable, so you can add it to oatmeal (make oatmeal with 1/2 the required amount of boiling water and 1/2 the amount with hot micellar milk - not boiling), add it to coffee, add it to your favorite egg custard recipe, etc. Some of the Farm Fresh stores in the area carry AchieveOne drinks.  They are basically foo-fy coffee drinks w/ protein. Then, there the Bullets.  The Vitamin Shoope carries those, too.  Hold your nose and chuck it back (haha). Any Whey is NOT tasteless.  I gagged on it (and I can drink prety much anything), so my son uses it to make protein drinks for himself. Good luck and congrats on the 20 pound loss...............

I agree with Jill, use skim (or even 1 or 2%) milk instead of water. Powdered drinks taste much better with milk, and you get a little bit more protein. I really enjoy my protein shakes: 8 oz skim milk (4 g protein), 1 package WonderSlim strawberry powder (15 g protein), and 1 scoop Unjury unflavored powder (20 g protein). 39 grams in an 8 oz drink that tastes good (at least to me). Call or email the internet providers and ask for free samples. Try everything until you find something you like (or can tolerate). Good luck. Joe Bear

Okay one thing to consider is if you are using milk, are you using the skim, if not you could be getting nauseous from the sugar content in the milk.  Also if you are using skim, it could be lactose intolerance, it happens to a lot of people after surgery. A lot of people like the unjury unflavored, you can add it to the broths, yougurt, oatmeal, etc. or even to the crystal light.  A lot of the Nectar proteins are good with crystal light drinks too.  I only liked one thing and that was the Isopure Zero Carb, Dutch Chocolate, mixed with milk, tasted like chocolate milk to me.  The bullets are a good idea also. As for your liquid intake, you are very early out & possibly just can't physically get it all in.  Just keep sipping & trying.  It took me awhile to be able to get my full 64 oz. in plus my protein drinks.  I was not a water drinker before, I have to do crystal light, etc.  Can't do just plain water, I don't like the taste.  Keep sipping & trying, you will get there.  The more you get the better you are, I found that my weight loss was slower if I wasn't hydrated enough, once I was getting in the 64, then it was more consistent.  We are here for you, you can do this.

I like the Unjury Chocolate.  Right now I mix it with water (DR orders/I'm 5 days post op) but will mix it with 1% milk when I can. But I add a little DeVinci sugar free Cherry Syrup to it and I look forward to that every morning. 20gr right off the bat. I tried the Isopure Alpine something drink.I'm glad I only bought 3 bottles. Now I only have to through away 2 of them. Tastes do change after surgery.
