Well I made an appointment to go up to Johns Hopkins to meet with Dr. Schweitzer for a consultation, see the nutrionist and get the psych eval done.  Still I'm holding my breath.  He's self-pay costs are like $20K and other places are less.  But I hope that my family steps up to the plate like they've told me they would.  I hope my wife and rest of my family will support me thru this, as I don't know how on-board they are.  If it were just me I'd take out the loan and get it done.  I WANT TO BE POST-OP and have my own 100lb loss story to tell.  I just want it so badly.

Good for you for making the first step! Things can be made to fall into place once these first steps are made..... I am sure your family will support you once they become involved and understand what is required - but remember - this is what you need to do for your health and well being, regardless of what they say or even whether they support you or not. Time for a family chat I think so you can see where everyone stands and then you know clearer exactly where you are and what resourcers you need.... Also remember the cheapest is not always the best - this is your life you are talking about......and they may also have a self pay option - you can discuss this with them ................ We are all here if you need anything or for private messages etc..... don't be shy...... Jackie

Jack, I don't know your situation, but my hubby and I own a small business. We have to purchase our own insurance. This year, we added a weight loss rider to the policy. It can only be added or taken away at renewal. It costs an extra $150 month with a $3500 maximum out of pocket . For me, this was the better decision than self pay.Might be something for you to consider.

Okay, I just read some of your post and understand a little more. I had to decide if I should pay more for insurance, etc... My reasoning is that I should be eating a lot less and will make up the difference  in money . May be a crazy idea, but I'm thinking I'll save that much money in about a year on not eating out, or over indulging in food., etc. What do you think?
