Post Op Food & Drink Q&A
I would appreciate any info on the following to help me along:
Water/Fluid Intake - Will sipping be life long? Or will I eventually be able to take a real drink? I was always one of the glugg, glugg, glugg people especially when I was super thirsty and am finding that the sipping is SO hard and not satisfying. I feel like I'm thirsty all the time becuase I can only get about two sips down every 15min or so. Getting in my shakes and fluids has been literally an all day affair to make sure I can get enough fluids in!
Spagetti Sauce - I saw a post about a low sugar variety and was glad to see it because I didn't realize spagetti sauce had sugar in it. Sure enough I checked the labels at the store this past weekend and most had sugar as the third ingrediant. My obesity center rules are that sugar cannot be one of the first three ingrediants or it will cause dumping. Are there any varieties of spagetti sauce that ARE safe to eat? Where did you find it?
Peanut Butter - Same as spagetti sauce - is there any peanut butter brands out there that are safe to eat? Where did you find it?
That's all I can think about right now. When I thinkof more, I'll send along. :)

PLease take into consideration Im 2 years out so my advice is going to vary as well as others a nd im just telling you of my experiences. First they told me I couldnt drink from a straw too but I do sippy will follow they rule for you for a while I dont think they ever recommend us gulping I dont becasue when I have it has been VERY painful and causes air and gas. SO Id stay w/ the sipping for now, Spaghetti sauce in the begining Id say no because I did get sick from it. But now I can tolerate it but I look and read my labels, I use Hunts in the can I dont have any in the cupboard so I cant tell you the sugars in it off my head. But thats why it is very important reading those labels. Now Id say unless you make it yourself and know what is in it stay away from it, and Im not sure you should be having the pasta so fresh out but that will depend on your surgeon so discuss it with him. Now Peanut Butter Ive been eating that for a while good source of protein I buy the Peter Pan or Skippy which ever was the lowest I dont have any of that here either seems Im out of alot need to go shopping for a few things, thanks for helping me make a list. Just take a day when you can spend time in the store alone so you can label shop, I would choose a large chain like Krogers, Supper Walmart not sure what you have in your area, but the larger the easier to fine sugarfree items and or lower sugar items. I hope this has helped some. If we can help more just ask. Merry Christmas....

I'm 3 weeks post RNY (12-4). I drink water in big sips, almost a gulp and it doesn't bother me. I eat peanut butter. SOmetimes on the spoon and sometimes on salteen crackers. It seems that the sugar difference between low fat and regular peanut butter isn't much. I try to limit sugar to about 5-7 grams per serving. So far so good.
Yes Bill I should have mentioned before I was told 10 grams and below of sugar was my goal sorry.

Yes you will get to a point of being able to take bigger sips, gulps not recommended. We were advised to get a water bottle, with a sip top to help control the sips in the beginning. It will feel like it takes forever to get what you need in at the beginning. Just keep trying.
I was told 7 grams or less of sugar. Sugar is in a lot of things, dressing, yogurt, cottage cheese, spaghetti sauce, peanut butter, etc. It may or may not cause you to dump but you do have to remember that a lot of times the low sugar varietys are higher in fats (to improve the taste) and you could dump on that too.
It is trial and error as to how you find what works for your body. Although getting advice from others who have been through it is helpful, you really should follow your doctors plan. Merry Christmas!
