Fish Question

I was never a fish eater before surgery. I'd eat deep fried cod at Long John Silver or Capt D's and was OK with that, BUT, any other fish I couldn't stand. I hate fishy tasting fish and really can't stand the bones.  My question: Is there a fish that would be good broiled that doesn't have a fishy taste? The only one that I think may be ok is Talapia.  I gag with the smell of tuna. It will be a few weeks before I'm able to eat meats/fish. I'm 3 weeks post RNY.

How about salmon?  Cosco sells it individually packaged and it's perfect. I also like thier salmon burgers.....

Usually a white fish, like flounder, cod, halibut don't taste fishy. I've yet to have Talapia.  Here is a tip for making fish--soak it in milk for at least an hour. No fishy smell or taste!

Try baking it with lots of cilantro its sold in the vegetable isle near the parsely be careful not to get parsely which they kinda look alike use alot of the Cilantro when baking just wa**** and then cut it on top of the fish which ever you choose and I add a small can of drained garlic tomato's and then when the fiss is almost finished I sprinkle shredded cheese on top and melt. Set oven on 350 and it will depend on how long your cooking for  on the size of your fish and thickness dosent take long though about  30 mins.

I prefer a white fish as Jen mentioned.  Tilapia is actually my favorite.  My hubby is the cook when it comes to fish, we usually have it grilled or baked with a butter/garlic baste.  He usually wraps it in foil to keep the moisture in.  Try looking at some cook books and getting some ideas and trying it.  You may be surprised at how much your tastes change and how much you enjoy new things now.

Hi Bill - I love tilapia & flounder & also rainbow trout (but that might be a bit fishy-ER). Since my WLS tuna is an absolute NO NO. I STILL gag & get nauseous when others fix it. I hope you find some that make you happy. Its trial and error really. All best...

Bill -  I am 8 days Post OP and I have been eating Salmon for 2 days now.  As Jill said, go to Costco. I cook it with some seasoning and then shred it up real small while cooking.  The thing about Salmon, it taste just as great cold.  Hope this helps. God Bless

I have always heard ( because I too gag at the smell of seafood ) if you sear your meat in a frying pan with your seasonings or rubs before you bake or broil it get's rid of the fishy smell and I would guess that the taste would do the same...keep me posted cause Im hot on your trail!
