Not having much luck with food

Okay...here I am again...struggling.  I'm on the pureed/soft food stage (4 weeks post-op) and am having a hard time keeping food down.  I don't know if I'm eating too fast or what, but my pouch is extremely cranky.  I've done cottage cheese and scrambled egg substitute okay.  But then one day it works and the next it doesn't.   I've noticed that the more protein I get in, the better I feel.  So I'm really getting frustrated.  I can't wait to eat "normal" food, but I'm not sure how I'm going to get there if I keep throwing things up.  My second post-op appt is next Weds, and I'm hoping for some suggestions from my dr.   I've also noticed that each doctor must have their own diet plans, since some people on OT are eating peanut butter, crackers, and other foods that I'm not allowed to have yet.  You guys are killing me.....I'm DYING for a saltine....something crunchy.....normal :op Anyone else having trouble eating post op????  Don't even mention protein shakes or drinks either.....my battle with them has been put aside for now.....I still can't stomach them.  Thanks!

You may be eating to fast or you could have a stricture.  Try eating slower and see if the helps.  Keep an eye on it.  If your liquids start problems then definitely check with your dr. asap.  Protein does help, cravings are normal.  Just take it slow and day by day.  It will get better.

Im on soft foods and have had the same thing happen and wonder about the same thing. Today is a recovery day for me since I had a bad episode last night. Ive been taking things VERY slowly and doing ok today. But I went back to broth, yogurt, and liquids..

I really enjoyed red pepper hummus on Ritz crackers. My nutritionist said I could have Ritz because they pretty much dissentigrate in your mouth - especially after chewing 20 to 30 times before swallowing. Like you, I sometimes liked egg substitute, but sometimes not. But grits were always tasty. Other ideas from my nutritionist: guacamole, Dannon lite and fit yogurt (flavored, but no fruit), Trader Joe's meatless meatballs, summer squash, fudgesicle, smooth peanut butter, applesauce, refried beans, tuna, fresh crab meat, V-8 juice. Your results may vary - and check with your nutritionist. Joe

Good am, I think its important for you to slow things down and really focus on taking smaller bites and chewing longer. It is trial and error in the beginning. One day things may work great but another they may not. Your body is still changing and you are still learing to adapt. Its a slow process. Yes, the more protein your body gets the less cranky your pouch will be. Try & document what you are eating and drinking and when in a food journal. Then next week when you attend your appointment it will tell your doc how you are doing. Include which foods are not working out for you. In addition, if you are finding that all foods are becoming an issue to keep down and even most liquids you should call your doc and tell them. A stricture can occur at any point and can quickly cause a list of other issues for you. Dehydration is scary!!! I think all of us at one time had some type of issues eating post-op. Again, its trial and error. Another suggestion is going back to basics until you can keep down things and slowly work your way up again. Take care & keep us posted.....

Good morning, I also have Dr T for my surgeon. Stick to his eating plan to a T. Take it really slowly. Your protein is sooooo important, pls try to get your shakes in. I did a lot of SF popsicles, FF cottage cheese small curd, wendys chili pureed in the blender. With the chili it felt like I was eating "normal".  I have my 1 yr appt on the  9th at 10:30 i think. Maybe I'll see you there. Good luck with everything. Just remember to take it really slow. I also used baby spoons to limit my intake. Have a blessed new year.

Yep...what everyone else said..... But..here is a tip that worked for me....I used a baby sippy cup and a baby spoon for the first 2 - 3 months to ensure that I was eating and drinking slow ly and really taking my time.  Also, I made it a point to sit at the kitchen table to eat - that was the ONLY place I allowed myself to eat at.  I set the timer on the stove for 30 minutes and ate until that timer went off, then I was done. (hey...I need to get back to doing that!) At soft food stage, Nancy (Dr Clark's and Terricina's Nurse) said that I could eat a little bit of mac and cheese, ritz crackers, crab meat w/ a little bit of drawn butter (watch the fat on this, may cause dumping), ricotta cheese with marinara sauce and melted moz cheese (still my fav, I just add ground turkey to it and bake in the oven in a ramikin dish), mashed potatoes, Taco Bell refried beans and cheese, etc.  Anything that would get really mushy is what you should be eating at this stage.  So, I'm not sure as to why you feel like you cannot have those things.  Personally, though, I stayed away from those types of carbs until I was 1 year out.  I don't think that I've even had mac and cheese to this day...... As far as today it goes down and tomorrow is doesn't...unfortunately, that's just how it is.  Even at 2 years out I run into that quite a bit. I understand that protein is a problem for you.  But, it's a problem that you must get a hold of and conquer.  protein is VERY important, and you are not going to be able to eat at the protein levels WLS Center prescribes...not for a while.  I know that many of them are yucky, but I will tell you that you will NEVER find one that tastes like a Dairy Queen Blizzard, so stop trying.  Find one that you can tolerate (even if only a *****old your nose and go for it.  Protein is EXTREMELY important for your recovery....... Hope you get to feeling better.
