Next Hurdel coming on Wednesday

I had RNY on Dec 4th. I've been doing ok with eating.. so far. I get nauseas after a lot of my meals if I eat too much or too fast. I also don't know what to eat as I don't have any cravings for anything. My problem is that I go back to work on Wednesday for the first time since surgery. I'm so afraid that I'll get sick and or dump while at work. I work in an office environment with about 20 other people and several clients. I'm still on soft/pureed foods.

Hey there ! Congrats on your surgery !  I want to ask, did your doctor give you a list of foods you can eat ?  If not he should have . Each surgeon has his or her own protocol of foods to start on . So it is hard to tell you what you should be eating at this stage .  I can tell you for me , at one month out , I wasstill on softer foods .  To avoid dumping , you should avoid all foods with sugar and fats . Read the label . If sugar is the 4th item in the ingrediant ... leave it alone . Your fat intake should be no more than 3 % with each meal .  I worked in an office as well when I first had surgery . It was fairly easy at first as I sat in my car to eat . But as I got more used to my body, I ate at my desk. Foods such as deli rolls , salads ..cheese are so easy to eat . If you are cleared for those foods .. give them a try . I would always .. always follow what your surgeon says to eat at your stage .  Best to you ,  Natalie

At my 1 month appt with Dr. Mann,  I was released to "normal" foods. What I did was stick with what I knew worked and added a new food only at home. You may want to measure your food and eat with a small spoon/fork. Keep in mind that the nerves in your pouch and stomach are still healing. For the first couple of months, I ate at the computer because it slowed me down. Eating with my family at the table, well  there was too much talking and eating thus I did n't pay attention to HOW I was eating. Keep Natalie's advice in mind about sugars and fats. Refer to the book from PNH, call Mrs. King and keep leaning on us! You are doing great !

Good am Bill, glad you are doing pretty well so far. I worked in an office setting after wls. I suggest bringing your own foods & drinks. We had a cafeteria type setting but also had a row of conference rooms in the middle for more personal space when needed. The kewlest thing for me was most everyone on my team knew about my surgery and were completely supportive. I brought my own foods and I ate alone for a bit until I got use to being able to eat and chat with co-workers. Then it was a challenge initially because we all know that when chatting we can and will eat faster than we really should to begin with. At times, the smell of others lunches & the cafeteria food would get me. I'd go to the restroom or even better go outside and get some fresh air by walking around the parking lot area. The key in my opinion is to take a bite and savor it fully. Make it last really. Take a bite and slide it off your fork or spoon and really taste it and chew it well. The key is taking your time. It will eventually get easier. Just remember to take time to yourself initially and I think you'll do fine. All best .....

Hi Bill, All the advice you've gotten is excellent. I don't have much to add. I just want to wish you luck going back to work. And if you have any real concerns, call your nut or surgeon. Take care and a blessed new year to you and yours.

Yep you got great advice so far.  I agree that bringing your own food is a great idea.  For soft foods, bring easy things, oatmeal, yogurt, cottage cheese, egg salad, tuna salad, chicken salad, chili, etc.  Look at your work schedule and the eating schedule you have set so far.  Try to stay as close to that schedule as you can.  Take it slow, that is key for the nauseas.  Trying new things only at home is a great way to prevent dumping at work.

Bill...you can do this!  The hard part has already been done - your surgery....

You have already gotten some great advice.  Take those things that you KNOW will not make you sick to work.  Those things that you have not yet tried are best left at home.  I speak from experience.....

I was doing great on hard boiled eggs, so I took some homemade egg  salad to work and dumped.  It did not occur to me that the FF mayo would send me over the edge. But...good luck, my friend......And know that you will be fine!

I'm right there with you!  You can do it and best of luck!  I would definatley take the advice of new things at home only, that's what I'm going to do starting Wednesday.

Thanks to all of you for your advice. I know I deal well with shrimp ****tail... so I guess the 1st 2 days I'll be eating shrimp ****tail. Everyone in the office knows I had WLS. Maybe more of them will want WLS if they have to eat shrimp ****tail for lunch everyday..lol Happy new year to you all..
