Dr. Schirmer @ UVA

Hello I was reading posts from patients of Dr. Schirmer. Does everyone have to do the 6 months diet prior to surgery? Is this recommend by Dr. Schirmer or your insurance? Thank you for any help you can give. Kara

Hi Kara.  Welcome to our board.  The medically supervised diet is a requirement from your insurance company.  What insurance do you have?  Maybe someone on here has the same as you and can tell you what is required.   When do you go to see him?

Hi Kara welcome and Congrats, Dr Shirmer is the best here in the Charlottesville area you couldnt have picked a better surgeon. Where are you located and when do you get to see him? And the answer to your question could be both it all depends on the insurance most of all. Like Nancy said you can call and ask there requirments. Keep us posted.

Thanks ladies, My appointment with him is on the 31st of this month, I just called them because I haven't recieved my package yet. Their going to mail it out Monday my PCP gave them the wrong address. I have Anthem BCBS and the only require that I have a BMI of 40 or higher.

Hi Kara, Everyone does not have to do a 6 month supervised diet at Dr.Schirmer's office, it is a requirment by some insurance companies, not many, including medicare. He is a wonderful, caring very knowledgable doctor and you couldn't go wrong using him. Best of Luck, Pam.

welcome, I too am a patirnt of dr. schirmer. he is awesome!!!! he recommend the 6 months to me but if your ins. doesn't make you do it neither will he just tell him weather your ins. needs it or not. I wish you the best of luck you are in great hands with him. Holly
