Calling All Chefs.......

Amanda asked a great question of Friday about how to figure out the nutrition value of a recipe.  I was afraid that it would get lost, because the way this board works. But...this is really imporant for all.... www.accuchef.com has a trial software that you can download.  It allows you to add your recipe, add ingredients that are not already in the database (like Splenda) and create your own cookbooks. Once you add the full recipe, it will tell you the nutritional value of that recipe, including carbs, sugas, and protein.  You can also change the serving size and get update nutritional information based on that change. Once you receive this information, log it into www.fitday.com to complete your tracking. Enjoy...........

Sounds good, but I ran into a problem when I tried to add several ingredents to the database.  For example -  I tried to enter the ingredients for a from-scratch cake using SPLENDA. SPLENDA.  The package shows -0- calories for a serving (1 tsp) because of the way the USDA allows companys to figure the nutritional analysis.   No where on the package does it tell you what it would be for 1 cup.  This is an issue with any ingredient unless you have to know what the real calorie count is for say 1/2 cup or 1 cup, otherwise when you try to figure out a recipe, the calculation is off.

Try calorieking.com to see if they have something there.  Or even the Splenda website might have some info. I don't use large amounts of Splenda, so it wasn't an issue for me. Good luck!

Definately go to calorieking.com.  I just did a search on Splenda, and it comes up with teaspoon, ounces and grams.  I put in 8 ounces (1 cup) and was SHCOKED...909 calories..........

But, this will allow you to put in the Splenda info into the Accuchef database.  I would go with 1 ounce for the database and let the program convert it over when you say 1 cup, etc. for your recipe.  I hope this makes sense. But, calorieking.com is another great tool for us......

I'll check it out.  900 calories in 1 cup of Splenda sound too high.  There are only 770 in 1 cup of white sugar.    It really is frustrating.

It is frustrating...I hear ya on that one....

One question that I always have with stuff like this is when talking about 8 ounces...are they talking about 8 ounces of weight or 8 ounces in a cup.  8 ounces of Splenda will weigh far less than 8 ounces of reg sugar, which might explain the calorie difference - more Splenda vs reg sugar.  But..if they are talking 8 ounces = 1cup, well...that would be different. Let me know what you find out.... Thanks!

Might get a better reading if we figure out how many tsp are in a cup.  I see when you increase the number of tsp on calorieking, the calories and carbs increase. Example: 1 tsp = 2 calories, .5 carbs 2 tsp = 4 calories, 1 carb 10 tsp = 20 calories and 5 carbs This might give you a better ballpark figure............
