My BMI just Frustrates the Heck Out of Me

This is really more a rant than anything so I am sorry upfront. :) I am 6'3" tall and weighed 329 lbs. this morning. So that makes my BMI 41.1. That means I am extremely obese. Now, I am not trying to be in denial here. I had a RNY 6 weeks ago because I needed it. But I have dropped 60 lbs. in 6 weeks and am up to running nearly 3 miles on the treadmill and am lifting weights again. I in no way think that I am where I need to be, but it just kicked me in the gut when I saw my BMI. OK...just needed to vent to a crowd who might understand. That being said, hope all are well and that you all keep losing!

Just keep doing and it will go down. When I began, mine was in the 40's...  it's lower now.  i'm getting there. Enjoy the journey.

Pay no attention to that flippin BMI chart anymore if you can.  Let your clothes, mirrors/reflections, and those closest to you be your guide.  I don't calculate mine at all.  I'm 5'11" and flux between 195lbs and 205lbs.  I had gotten as low as 183lbs and everyone said how sick I looked.  The kicker.....according to BMI, even at 184lbs, said I was still overweight!  Said I should weigh between 160-170lbs!    Just keep doing what you do and you'll do fine.  Congrats on your weight loss so far!  Keep it up!

We do understand.  You are on the road to getting that BMI down, do the calculations to see where you were 6 weeks ago & see how better the number is today.  You are getting there.  It just takes time.  Keep up the good work!!!!

Yes it is important .. but right now as newly post op as you are , you need to concentrate on good foods, exercise - protein and water .. The weight falling off right now is going to happen no matter what you do .  It is the months ahead that you will really need to concentrate on . But for now .. Take it all in stride...to lose 60 lbs in 6 weeks is fantastic!!!  Enjoy the fact that you are doing that, that you are getting healthier every day, and keep in mind that the BMI chart is there as a reference.  I know that if I were to get the where I need to be on the BMI chart to be "normal weight" I would be a skeleton!  So, take it into account, but the thing to really concentrate on is doing what you are doing...eating healthy & exercising...and enjoy watching that scale go down and down and down! Take care, Cindy

Great work at losing so fast and running so far so soon. I am 6' 3 1/2" and was grateful for that 1/2 inch. I went from extremely obese to "merely" obese last month and it is a GREAT feeling. You will be there in a few days. Keep it up. Joe

We at least I knew I'd find a friendly crowd here. I played college football at 290, so I have always been able to carry weight. Of course, it eventually caught up with me. When I got up to 406 it wasn't exactly easy to work out. Plus the demands of work, marriage, and kids made it so that exercise wasn't a priority. Plus I really freaking love to eat. Ultimately that is why I chose to do the RNY. I knew if I could peel off the weight I would exercise again. I was blown away by how out of shape I was, but I was on the treadmill walking for 25 minutes 7 days post-op. I just was so sick of feeling bad and making excuses for my fat butt that I knew I had to push myself. All that said, the BMI just sucks. :) But, I'll ignore it.
