So, winter is upon us.  A lot of really cold, nasty, wet days are coming & many of us just don't want to or can't get out in the elements to walk or ride bikes.  If you're like me, I ain't driving to no gym if there's snow on the ground.  Call me silly all you want, but I had a wreck in bad weather so am a bit fearful of driving in it now. Many of us have treadmills or stationary bikes in our homes & at the very least we have homes, some with stairs.  In other words, who needs to leave the house to exercise?  Personally, I have a recumbent bike that has been used very little. Well, tonight my darling hubby gave me the most wonderful idea that we can all do.  Virtual-travel!  Ok, I can see ya'll looking at me with that "huh?" look on your faces.  Let me explain... Each of us will pick our favorite city.  It can be one we love, or one we've always wanted to visit.  For now, let's stick with the 50 states.  It can be any city or town anywhere.  Next we'll need a starting point in the state that your town/city is in.  I recommend we use the State Capital.  For instance,  let's start with VA.  Let's say you all want to come visit me in Middletown.  I recommend we start from the state capital, which I believe is Richmond.  From Richmond to Middletown is 136 miles.  So we set a goal of 136 miles in 7 days to either walk or ride.  Those that walk without the aid of a treadmill will need a pedometer & you could just walk all over your house, up & down stairs, round & round.  We all would then go to google maps to find out the mileage from that state capital to the city/town of the week.  The person "hosting" the city could share bits of information about her/his town.  Things like why you like the city/town so much, or where's a good wl-friendly restaurant to try, or little-known facts about where we're all going. If ya'll like the idea, I recommend we compile our list during the rest of this week so we can all get started on Monday.  Mike even suggested we chart our own progress...figure out what town we stopped in on our journey through the week.  We could even use the ticker to keep track of how many miles we've accumulated & how much further to go.  Since we'd all be on the same route because we all start from the same place, it would be fun & interesting to see how many of us wind up in the same places on any given day.  We could do this by the order that people sign up.  That way we get to skip around all over the place. So what do you think?  Any takers?  I, for one, am sooo looking forward to doing this.  It would be so much more fun if a bunch of us did it together, but either way I'M gonna do it even if I have to do it by myself.  I just think it's such a clever idea.  Imagine riding or walking 4 or 5 miles in the morning & then rushing to the computer to see where you are on the route!  Ok, if ya'll wanna join in, PM me & I will compile the list...the list can be ongoing.  Each Sunday I will let ya'll know who the host is for the coming week  & where we are traveling to, as well as who arrived first.  That means ya'll will have to let me know what time & day you reached your destination. Since it's my idea, I'm gonna host our first trip.  I choose my hometown of Waimanalo, Hawaii.  It's 14 miles from the capital, Honolulu.  A nice, slow, easy start.  I'll give personal info on Monday.  So who wants to go to Hawaii with me & where we gonna go next?????

Hugs!
Ann

I am in.  I am hoping this will help me get in my cardio as I am very reluctant to do cardio.  Will start this tonight when I hit the gym.  Edit: okay now that I have had my coffee & can focus better, I reread the post & realize that we will start on Monday (next week).  Great.  Since I am the first to sign up that puts me on for the week after as host so I will start thinking about where I want to go.  Let me know how you are organizing this so that I can follow along for the next week.

Well I will try to answer the best I can. As for the ticker, I believe this would just be for our computer use to track our miles, like the weightoss tickers tracking lbs. lost. As for actually calculating the miles, if you are using equipment like a treadmill, eliptical, etc. they would have a mileage reading on them.  If you are using just your daily walking, you would need to count your steps (2,000 steps equals 1 mile according to a website I read), you can purchase a pedometer for this, available at most sporting good stores, probably at walmart, target, etc. also. I am definitely loving this idea & really going to put it to use in my workouts.

Us low-tech types,   i'd recommend clocking a .5 or 1 mile distance on a street using your car, walk it and see how long it takes.  Then approximate you walking time into miles based on that time. You may have to re-time yourself like every month or more as you will get faster as you stick with it. Talley-ho world travellers!
